I'm trying to create a class web site but I'm having problems using google sites. I have my side bar set up but when I click on it, nothing happens. I know I have to link it to something but how do I do it? ex. on the side bar I have Weekly Spelling Lists, I want to click on it to go to a page that I have typed in the list. Help.

However, assuming you have X amount of server space that is "yours" you should be able to upload your file to the site and give it a unique name. Locate that file, copy it's "address" paste, or type, that as mentioned below.
I manage a website for my little league - I have 90mb of space to play with. I don't want to clutter up the home (or other pages) with volumes of stuff that have to be waded through if they are not of interest to the user. I upload my files to the server and create hyperlinks that point to the whatever it is file. Those interested click on the link and it opens the file - those not interested aren't forced to read through it.
Again, it's not really that difficult - once you walk through it you'll "own" it... (-8
Question - why are you using word pefect? MS Word is much more commonly used - Adobe pdf files are practically universal.
If you respond to this post an email address that goes through TNet and I'll send you a link to my site to give you an idea.

Then do this: 1) Save each WP document as a RTF 2) Import the RTF into OpenOffice 3) Save as PDF 4) Select file and then export/put/upload to your site
Hint: Give them good clean filenames with no special characters except for _ and - Don't use any spaces in the filenames, and try to keep them under 15 characters. For example: Trig_C1 or English_QZ_1
I have been running into a lot or problems in importing MS files that have ugly names into Mac's, and then back to Windows,... Eventually something will go wrong. MS did the industry a great dis-service by accepting/allowing such ugly names.

I'm thinking of setting up a classroom web site that I can update everyday with homework, school information, etc. I am looking for an easy, free web site. Any suggestions??? I would like something really easy and simple to use. Thanks
Cybrary ManI agree with the previous poster who recommended School Notes. It is easy to use and it is a good starting website. Eventually you can go on to a more sophisticated type of website.

What do you do with your kindergarten students in > computer class? > Leslie Hi, I also play Simon Says. It's amazing how many kids and adults think that the monitor is the computer. I also teach one letter of the keyboard each week. I have a tall sheet of paper with 3 letters on it one over the other. The first one has Q, A, Z. We talk about the letter A and how it has an upstairs neighbor Q and a downstairs neighbor of Z. Then I have the kids raise their hands if they have an A, Q or Z in their names. We practice their name a lot. Some kids have it so easy like Ian and Noah while the Stephanie's and Elizabeth's have a rough time of it. They love learning how to change the size of the letters and the color. We spend a couple of lessons learning how to turn on and off the computer. Our computers require you to press CTL ALT DEL simultaneously and then type a Password. It takes a while for everyone to get that. Shutting down the computer correctly takes more time. When they know how to do both I give them a certificate or a pencil with a piece of paper taped to it like a flag saying I Can Turn the Computer On and Off so they can take it home to mom and dad. We also practice inserting disks or CDs. We use KidPix extensively with Kindergarten. There are books out of different projects to do with KidPix. We have a variety of games that reinforce the skills they learn in their classroom in phonics and counting. There are many online games that can be bookmarked or you can create shortcuts for ( although half my kids already know how to go to Disney and Nickelodeon and Club Penguin ). There are some Clifford games that deal with sounds for example and Sesame Street does a letter and a number a day. Drawing programs are a lot of fun. Sammy's Science Center and Bailey's Book House have several activities for Kindergarten age but the kids favorite is A to Zap. There's an activity for each letter of the alphabet.
Kindergarteners can write simple stories if you give them a list of words to copy. For example. Ask them to tell about who lives in their house and write down for them father, mother, sister, brother, dog, cat, and ask them for other words they need to know to describe their family. Or have them copy simple poems for holidays.
You can make cards ( can take a lot of colored ink ) or bookmarks. Kids like to take things home.
In our lab we run several blocking programs. 1) XP pop up blocker, 2) Cybersitter and 3) SteadyState. On the computers with Vista I also use Parental Controls. (yes, I am running them all at one time)
It does slow the computer down but I have very few pop ups that show up in class. I have also trained the children to let me know if a pop up does get through. They earn stickers and such. Then I can copy that address and add it to the blocking programs.
It also hurts the high school students as it blocks everything. however, I attempt to place older students on a Vista computer and they have a seperate log in. This way I can reset the blocking.
I will be teaching keyboarding to a Down's Syndrome high school student this year. She is very adept on the computer. Does anyone have experience with this? Any suggestions?
Any good ideas to share for what you do on the first day with students? I have 9th graders, and have been looking for a technology/computer skills inventory, but want to try something more interactive as well..(i might not have access to the computers on the first day...)

Hi,
I teach K-8th grade. Usually with 8th graders we do an end of year project about themselves but sometimes we have trouble finishing it so last year I did that project first and the kids loved it. They did a Powerpoint about themselves. You can throw in whatever topics you want. On subsequent days you can teach different techniques that you want to see in the Powerpoint such as adding music or sound effects, including other files into your powerpoint which allows each student to add their powerpoint to one Powerpoint that's for the whole class. We play these at Open Houses and graduation.

I teach grades 5-8. Our curriculum is mostly MS Office.
The kids are good but it becomes a classroom management problem when they can't get anything done. It's not a great way to start the year off...or my career, for that matter. Please help!
