I teach computers in a rural Oklahoma School. I am looking for a whole class pen pal for grades 3-6. I recently set us up an email. My objective is to correspond with another classroom as an opening activity for each class that meets once a week for an hour. If you are interested please email me at the address above.

We could check and correspond as a classroom whole group once a week. My kiddos do not know much about computers. This is a new class for our school. Please get back with me if you are still interested.

I'm planning on using this DVD in my classroom for my computers students. Does anyone happen to have a worksheet for students to complete covering the material in the video? Thank you!
I love this video! I have my students take notes their own notes and I post mine for them to use as well, then they take a quiz. This year, for my younger students, I took 3 days with it and also made it a lesson on how to take notes during a presentation - I would stop it and let them tell me what they thought they should be writing down and then give them a minute or 2 to do so. We talked about not worrying about how to spell names, how to make a quick note to look something up later, using key words rather than sentences, etc. They really did pick it up quickly.
You could make your own worksheet. The video is made in obvious groups and follows a pattern of delivery, at least until the space race part! Then it gets wild and out of order because computers were getting wild and out of order!
Last school year, I had posted my site on here. I just wanted those that used it to be aware that my url address has changed, and I now have my own domain. Everything that was there before is still there. Have a great school year!
Hello all! I have a question. I am taking over a computer teaching position and it's for grades K-6th. On the curriculum, the lesson calls for "techknowledge unit 1 part 3."
Is anyone familiar with techknowledge? Are these units online, because when I log in, I am taken to an admin page. I don't have lessons TO show. I'm so confused!
Ms. LinzYes! That's the one! We JUST started SRA TechKnowledge. I don't know how I "grade" the students on their performance when it takes them the whole period to complete one lesson. Any suggestions?

I came across this site today and WOW!!! This is what I've been looking for... a safe way for my kids to explore the internet without me clicking every link...
If you want a FREE safe internet option for your classroom, computer room, etc. check out [link removed]
This is the first time I am posting a message to your chatboard. I would appreciate if you guys could help me out on an issue I am facing right now.
First let me explain my job profile. I teach computers from Grade 1 to Grade 3. Mostly Word and Paint programs. I also make the kids work on their typing skills and mouse skills by making them play online games.
Now we have school inspection coming up and i have been asked to prepare a log of students' work. Now, i evaluate students work on a bi-weekly basis by giving marks to their work. I was asked by the school head to take printouts of all my students work and prepare a file , which i dont find it very feasible. Since i handle six classes with 25 students each, i feel taking printouts of all of them is time consuming and not too eco-friendly.
can you guys help me out on this issue and let me know what are the different options or possibilities i have in order to maintain a log of my students' work?
The above advice is directed towards all computer teachers.
Ask yourself which sounds better?
Parent: "What did you do/learn in school today?"
Child: "Not much, we got to play games on the computer during free time."
OR
Parent: "What did you do/learn in school today?"
Child: "Not much, we got to explore simulations on the computer during investigation time."
- Use of the word game can be a "hot button" for administrators and parents. This may have instigated this evaluation, and the print outs may be the dirt over your coffin.
Sameera BKThanks Leslie, Bob for your great ideas. I am now working on developing a good documentation of my work in the lab that will give a fair idea of what the children are doing here.
Because of the H1N1 virus, I was told to have each class wipe down, with Clorox wipes, their keyboards and mouse before using them. Will the moisture from the wipes rouine the keyboards? If so, what would you recommend? (Skins are too expensive for my small private school.) Leslie
...See MoreI have used Clorox wipes for a few years on the computers in my lab. I admit that I am using the wipes more frequently now then I have in the past. I am not "scrubbing" the keyboard - I just wipe the keyboard and mouse and let them air dry.
The packaging for Clorox wipes specifically states that the wipes can be used for computers.
I am just one person and others may have a different experience.

If they have weekly changes could someone else copy, cut, paste and upload the changes?

I need to get some books or ideas for lesson plans for subs. My district requires 3 days' worth.
The other computer teacher said subs don't usually follow the plans and usually let the kids play games, BUT the sub is required to leave a detailed report about our lesson plans...was there enough work, clear, etc.
Can anyone recommend a book with computer lesson plans?
Could you ...See MoreYou definitely want to have good sub plans since H1N1 is hanging over our heads. You also do not want to mention anything about games.
Do you have typing software? Could the students practice typing? If you don't have software, you could create a typing assignment that the students have to type into Word or the Wordpad.
Could you leave a packet on a topic such as computer history where the students would have to read something and answer questions?
Teacher Created Resources has books with lesson ideas but they may not be appropriate for a substitute who is not technically proficient.
I would not leave an activity where students have to go on the Internet. If your Internet access is down, then your substitute has no lesson.
