Computer Lesson NEEDED! Grades 6 through 8th

I have been teaching computers for many years in the catholic schools but every year I am finding it more and more difficult to come up with new and creative projects. I am in desperate need of projects using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. If anyone could share there lessons in these areas I would greatly appreciate the help. One of the toughest parts of this job is not the teaching it is the planning and creating lesson. Thank Kim

Our students use it to write reports and science labs and when they graduate they need it even more in High School to turn in a variety of work. Yes, there are other applications that do similar things but since Microsoft Office is still the one almost all of my students have on their computers at home, it's the one I make sure they know how to use.

For Excel, I start out reviewing the basics of a spreadsheet by having the students play battleship against one another using spreadsheets. They learn how to refer to cells, etc. with this and they enjoy it too. They also love to go on a "shopping spree" at Christmas and spend a pretend $1000. [link removed].

Word and PowerPoint projects can feed off of some of the Excel projects, after they do their surveys, have them analyze the results in a report or a presentation.

I teach the drawing tools in Word and have the students create a comic strip - I always do it after lessons on Cyber-bullying and the comic strip is about Cyber-bullying but it could be about anything. They also use drawing tools to create cards just for fun at Thanksgiving or Christmas.

With 7th grade I do lessons on Careers where they collect information in Word using tables. After they have collected the data, they create and present on their favorite career typically using PowerPoint to do this.

My students have great fun creating animations in PowerPoint - not the built in kind. They create a series of slides and create a flipbook animation. Another fun one is create a choose your adventure story or creating their own Jeopardy-like game.

Anything they are learning in other classes or anything happening during the year can be turned into a project in the lab that can use one or more of the Microsoft Office applications. I spend a lot of time on digital citizenship topics during computer classes and will have the students write reports, create presentations, analyze data, etc. about those topics.
