Anyway, I have been a special education teacher for the past five years. I have a school counseling degree also, but has not been fortunate enough to find a job in that position!!
When I resigned in my county, I was placed on the sub list. I subbed a couple of times, but I really just took time to heal mentally and physically. There was a lot going on at my past place of employment, to say the least!!
Well, this year I have applied for a couple of sped positions in other counties, and has not gotten anything yet. In the meantime, I have been offered to fill in for the counselor at an elementary school. She is out on maternity leave. I may be able to find something in another county because school hasn't began there yet.
The dilemma that I am facing is, do I continue to apply for other schools and leave my long term sub position, which I am sure I will love and may assist in me getting some experience in counseling? Or do I just enjoy the experience and wait until after the couneling gig to apply? I guess I wanted to know if it is worth it to get this experience, being that I have none in counseling.
Sorry if I am rambling, I am kind of rushing. Counselors please give me some insight!

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate your response!
I've talked with counselors who say helping students figure out family and personal issues is where they spend most of their time, as well as consultation and collaboration with outside social service agencies. Is that unusual or commonplace?
What is a typical day on your job? Thanks in advance for any responses.
That site will give you some ideas about what school counselors do. The job varies greatly school to school...it really depends on what your administrator expects from you.
I'm at the elementary level and I spend a lot of time doing classroom guidance, staff support stuff (504s, EC referrals, etc), individual counseling, small groups, test coordination, maintain permanent records, and more.

I would appreciate suggestions for teacher "skit" presentations that demonstrate the character trait of "resposibility" to students in grades 3, 4 and 5 (beginning of year.) My research has not been productive as yet... Thank you!

What I am wondering is how do we spread the word about our company as a resource to students and their families. For instance, if a student is close to being expelled, or struggles with behavior issues, does the counselor have a resource list they refer to when helping to support their students? Where do the professionals look to when they are looking for solutions? Our wilderness therapy intervention program has been successful to many families in helping them address issues at home to invoke higher achievement in other facets of the students lives. I believe this company can be such a valuable option for some families and I want to spread the message so that families who are unsure of the help that is out there, can find the help they need. Shoot me an e-mail with any of your thoughts! I really appreciate it! [email removed]]

LeahMake a bulletin board with pictures of the staff including teachers, custodian, principal, cafeteria workers, librarian, etc. That way the children and parents can learn the names with the faces of the school staff.
It could be titled: WELCOME! or WELCOME TO (name of school) Where We Care About Each Other.
