I'm looking fot input regarding essential learning skills and how counseling assessments (common/formative/summative) are used to determine students engagement at the high school level.
I am looking for new ideas to help get my K-5 students involved with Pennies for Patients. Last year we did a few fun things to help with the donations. Any new ideas to help with the campaign???

“I have the books on Feelings, Behavior, Health and the Activity book. I introduce Kelly Bear in Kindergarten with a few of the feeling lessons. The children are so excited to meet my special friend. I let them know they will be seeing Kelly Bear everytime I come for guidance when they are in first grade. The next fall the first question I get when they see me is "Are you bringing Kelly Bear?" My first grade guidance curriculum is all Kelly Bear. I use the three books all year long (I see them twice a month for 1/2 hour). I teach the lesson and then they get to ask Kelly Bear questions. It's so cute and I really enjoy using Kelly Bear as the children connect with him/her. The first graders complete the activities provided in the Kelly Bear Activity book and at the end of the year I put them in a book for them. They get to design their own book cover. They are so proud as they can see all the work they did. Parents are thrilled as their child's Kelly Bear book is a precious keep sake. When the first grades come back as second and third graders they always ask "Are you bringing Kelly Bear?" or "How is Kelly Bear?" In fourth grade when they see me walking down the hall with Kelly Bear they comment "There's Kelly Bear!" or "Can you bring Kelly Bear for a visit?" I've been working as a counselor long enough to see students I had in kindergarten graduate from high school. When I go to their graduation receptions they always have their Kelly Bear books displayed. They remember Kelly Bear and the lessons on feelings/behavior/health. It's one of their favorite curriculums from the guidance program.” Cindy Chidester,Elementary School Guidance Counselor, Waverly, Iowa

I am on my 3rd attempt at National Board Cerification for Teachers. I am taking the School Counseling assessment and need advice for Diverse Populations and Collaboration. If anyone has any suggestions to help me study, please let me know! Thanks so much!!

For Collaboration, think of the ripple effect. 1st collaborate with the student then what's the next layer? Parents? Community? Teachers? Admin? School Support personnel? CPS? Probation? Local Tribes? Community Centers? Peers? Where do you go to wrap services around students? Remember this is a simulated student, dream BIG. How much could you do if you had ALL the time in the world for this ONE student?
Passed on the 2nd time in November (2010). Alt. High School Counselor.
You will probably need another adult to assist you. If not a staff person, perhaps a parent volunteer.
That is a large age gap. Are there several 4th and 5th graders who could be leaders and create and act out role plays for the others? Then they could be discussed.
Another idea would be to have the children pair up with a buddy. The older ones could help the younger ones learn how to get along though reading books together, acting out situations, etc.
For role play ideas, click below. Also the Kelly Bear books on Feelings and Behavior could be effectively read by the older students. After listening to another child they practice listening and reflecting without judgement - a social skill.
I volunteered to coach this year at my school and I have seen such a positive impact on the girls who participated. I really enjoyed coaching. I'm not a runner myself so it was fun to train along with the girls. I love the mission of the program and that it totally aligns with many guidance standards. Definitely worth checking out!

Im currently working as one now, but I have been here 5 years and I have not grown nor am I pleased with my school duties. Plus I just got a new principal (they have been there about 2.5 months).
During the interview I know they will ask me the million dollar question...so why are you wanting to leave your current school? Im trying to think of an appropriate answer that lets them know that I am ready to move on, without making it seem bad to my school at the same time.
I really would like this new job, and any advice is welcome. Ive done teacher interviews before and I know they will want to know why I'm leaving.
I'm sure you know that being positive about your last 5 years and your accomplishments are important during the interview. Do you have pictures of special projects you could take?
Just some thoughts: Is the new school closer to where you live? Is it more progressive? Would the new school require different school duties that are more in line with school counseling? Are you looking for a new challenge? What is something you would like to do with children that you have been unable to do in your present school? Be honest, but enthusiastic, and practice your answers.
