Our Finest Hour - A silent mentoring program - by Todd Bloomer
Todd's school is mentoring students in a very different way. "The key to our program is that the student is not told they are part of a mentor program." Click below to read all about it...
Teachers supervise students employed at banks and daycares, in residence halls at Purdue, and for trucking companies. In my district, the department head (only available to MS and HS teachers) comes with a healthy stipend. But in elementary, we have grade level lead teachers who have extra assignments but there is NO stipend. What exactly do Department Heads do that is different from lead teachers in elementary?
jmeNo extra money or planning time for department heads in our school (high school). What and how much extra they do depends on a couple of things: 1. The size of the department; and 2. Whether and to what degree the subject is tested.
When I worked at a middle school in which we had grade-level teams. it was the same.
meepI have been the grade level chair (called lead teacher in some schools) and some years I have been paid a stipend and other years I have not been paid. It all depended on the principal's decision about where to spend money.

We aren't really departmentalized at my school; however, each grade level has a grade level "chair". I think they get a small stipend....and I DO mean small. I'm the school's music teacher, and I'm our department's chair. There are no extra free periods involved. We often meet informally, although we meet on certain Wednesdays when all the other grade levels meet.
lead teachers. I teach in a large hs and we have department heads. Most are excellent and are worth the tital. A few are worthless and everyone knows it and it's a joke. The elementary schools, since they are 1/6 the size of our high school, use lead teachers.
