Can anyone recommend a great modern piece of British literature?
Novel By modern, do you mean 20th century? Oscar Wilde "Picture of Dorian Grey" H G Wells "The Time Machine" G B Shaw "Man and Superman" George Orwell "1984" Pretty much any D H Lawrence Thomas Hardy "The Mayor of Casterbridge"

Arietta Rantis I just recently read Small Wars by Sadie Jones and it was great. It was a look at the civil war in Cyprus in the 1950's and England's affect on both Greek and Turkish citizens. I definitely recommend it!

Mark Absolutely! I was on that same quest a few years ago and struck gold with Mark Haddon's book, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME. It is a strange title, but it is well worth the read and the teaching. I had students who hated reading, reading ahead to find out what was going to happen next.
