I have taught mostly sophomores for several years now at a couple of different school districts and have yet to get a handle on how to get them to read the text when assigned. For example, we studied "A Separate Peace" this year. We would discuss a chapter in class then I would assign students to either finish that chapter or read the next chapter on their own for homework. I am not exaggerating when I say that I would be lucky if only one student per session actually did the reading. I have tried to keep them accountable through preannounced quizzes, pop quizzes, entry and exit tickets, and other methods. Has anyone had any luck in getting HS kids to actually read the text/chapter when assigned? Help! Thanks so much. :)

They read Romeo and Juliet as freshmen then can take a Shakespeare elective as juniors and seniors, and that's usually one of our more popular classes.

Generally, I only assign rea...See More

Modern Everyman That's awesome that you enjoy the challenge and it works for you...I'm just saying it doesn't work for my cohort, and I'd like to add that if some teachers are hanging on to Shakespeare just to "keep it alive," I don't think that's good for our kids. I'm not saying that is your intention Novel, but I get the impression that SOME teachers are doing ...See More
