I've seen strong readers who yet could not write well and have also seen strong readers who even wrote very poorly - genuinely dysgraphic.

Has anyone ever encountered a weak reader who could write well? I don't think it's possible - if a person can't decode, how do they encode?

I'd be interested in the experiences of others on this.
marjoryt I've seen a few writers who only did well with instructions, but wrote EXCELLENT examples.

I've also seen writers who simply could not put together a set of instructions, even after several assignments. Could not get the sequence correct, could not stay on the topic, left out essential details - usually they had several of these issues. <...See More

A This seems very unlikely. As you said, if the student can't decode, how can he encode? Possibilities: - The student's reading ability is actually better than you believe, but he hasn't been doing the reading, leading you to think he's incapable. - Someone else is doing the writing outside class.
