Hi, I am wondering what textbook or materials you use for your high intermediate students. I struggle with finding material for them.
I have 2 students in 8th grade, 1 in 10 grade and 1 in 12th grade. They all do very well with speaking and listening, but struggle with reading and writing.

I agree about Visions. It is appropriate for grades 8-12 and level B or possibly level C would be appropriate for high intermediate level. Azar is good for grammar as well. If you can only get one, though, Visions is more compehensive (reading, writing, speaking, listening).

Why would they label it as special education???? Special education has a specific legal definition, ESL doesn't met it, nor should it.
I've been using these sentence frames with my EL students for the past month. The frames themselves aren't new, but the way they are organized by comprehension skill and color coded for differenting for students is what I like. I have had great success and I think other EL students could as well.
What do you do with students that can't place out of ESL with the WIDA test? I have a student from China who has been in the US since 2nd grade. He is now in 10th grade. This is the first year that I have had him in my district. Thanks for your input.
I agree that sometimes it can be frustrating with students who do not exit the program after so many years. I currently have some students who have very high levels of English, but do not have the capability to exit the program due to their lack of academic maturation. Spend some time with the student on his or her other core classes to support them. I also take the time to review with them and practice test taking strategies. At times I think they are nervous test takers, and just need the extra istruction on study skills.
LoriThis a student who may need a screening for a learning disability which may be masking itself as a second language issue. I know it may be hard to tell the difference so a special ed. diagnostician may help!
I am looking for a week or two's worth of lessons covering Vocabulary, Writing, Grammar and Reading for ESL students..could be for either elementary students or adults. Anyone have suggestions for such a website?
I need to do an analysis of the pronounciation and grammar of an ESL student. Anyone have an idea on how to do that? What should I be looking for. It could be for beginner, intermediate or advanced student.
The text should come from a pedagogical source. Look for a pre- assessment or diagnostic sample in an ESL pronunciation/linguistics book.
You should buy or borrow the teacher edition of this book if you want a great text and scoring guide to use for analysis:
Clear Speech: Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North American English
by Judy Gilbert
Focus on suprasegmentals most and segmentals less.
Grammar: If you aren't familiar or haven't studied English grammar, look online or search for a sample analysis.
It may be good to have an improvised conversation with the student while the tape recorder is on. Ask questions about the past and future as well as the conditionals, "What happens if/What would you do differently IF/What would happen IF?"
Listen to the recording and note the errors. Then use your resources to determine a scope and sequence for learning.
Good luck!

I have a question about pay - I am part - time and get paid per diem. My hourly wage is standard. (about $22/hr but I only work 25 hrs a week or so) I don't get paid for personal or sick days, holidays, or vacation time. I get paid for a half hour prep time each day.
Just curious - is this typical of non - profit organizations and/or ESL jobs? I don't want to sound like a prima donna, but I've been struggling since this is my only job.

Are there any activities or suggestions for this student? I am a brand new ELL teacher and have not went to the training. I will in June. I really need advice and specific activities to do with her. Thanks!!!
