1. Does your school have an organized peer support program in place for students with disabilities or assign specific students to work with exceptional students? If so, could you briefly describe them?
2. What is the ratio of general students to exceptional students in your classes?
3. In what ways do you promote peer interaction in your classroom? To what extent do your general students interact with your exceptional student(s)?
4. Have you observed improved performance by the exceptional student in this situation?
5. Have you observed increased interaction of the student with his/her peers as a result of peer interaction or peer support?
6. What challenges and successes have you had with incorporating peer support activities for exceptional students?
> 1. Does your school have an organized peer support program > in place for students with disabilities or assign specific > students to work with exceptional students? If so, could you > briefly describe them?
Yes, but I am not all that aware of the details because I have not personally had a peer support student from this program in my classroom.
> 2. What is the ratio of general students to exceptional > students in your classes?
In my own classroom, I have one student receiving special education services (on an IEP) out of a general ed total of 36. The one student has a moderate auditory processing disorder.
> 3. In what ways do you promote peer interaction in your > classroom? To what extent do your general students interact > with your exceptional student(s)?
All my students do a lot of group work and every student in the class has an assigned partner (which changes every month or so).
> 4. Have you observed improved performance by the exceptional > student in this situation?
Yes, for him and my other students. Most of my students have gained confidence and improved academically.
> 5. Have you observed increased interaction of the student > with his/her peers as a result of peer interaction or peer > support?
Differentiation - you don't need to have your native Spanish speakers working on learning basic Spanish vocab that they already know, you don't need to have your native English speakers working on learning basic English vocab that they already know. Ideally you would have many activities that all students do (especially in the content areas) but when you are focusing on ESL for your native Spanish (or other language) speakers, you would group them for an ESL lesson. It sounds like you will be teaching a bilingual class in which there is Spanish instruction as well, so the same would apply to Spanish.
I am getting ready to take my National Board Certification exam, for English as a new language, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience or recommendations for this exam or even any testing materials that would help prepare for an ESL exam? Thank you!
Can you recommend a comprehensive, practical guide or textbook to teaching ESL? I'm planning to take the Praxis II in ESL to add ESL to my license.
I'm looking for a text that will help me do well on the Praxis and also give me some sort of clue should I actually land a job teaching ESL without any formal training in it.
I am writing an essay about how you assist the ELL in the content classroom. I need to know what you consider the top ten items that support the Ell. I also neeed to know what a teacher should do to make learning comprehensible.
