We are having difficulty with some of our non-Spanish- speaking English learner populations taking and passing the written Drivers's test here in Colorado. How about in other states? Are there states that allow illustrated tests? Are there ESL materials or programs that help these populations prepare for the tests?
W...See MoreI'm the CEO of an online ESL training company that hires a lot of teachers for ESL online ([link removed]).
I've noticed that unlike other areas of instruction (e.g. STEM, etc) online instruction in ESL is well received by most teachers who realize that interactive activities, blended with live instruction, produce good results.
Why is it that ESL instruction is better received than other subjects in this area for blended learning? I guess I'm just stumped that more people haven't embraced online, blended models for math and other language instruction. I've looked at what the folks at BYU are doing with TALL, and the student results are pretty impressive.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and get a feel for what teachers think about this.
I am new to Teachers.Net. I had to send a post regarding ESL teachers' pay. I started where so many of you have been-part-time and/or multiple jobs. I was fortunate to find a full-time job in an Intensive English program at a local university(in the '90's). Guess what? I was paid $29,000 a year. I found out the best paying ESL jobs are teaching in the public school systems, so I began working for the city school system. I think is ridiculous for trained professionals to be paid so little, but in the present economy, I am fortunate to have a job.91 vocational teachers in our system lost their jobs yesterday. I want to encourage you-hang in for as long as you can. Consider working abroad if you can. ESL/EFL will always be in demand-so just be flexible and you will find a job with a living wage.

Hi - I just learned that my state has just become a "WIDA state" and I know very little about it. What can you tell me about WIDA that I need to know? Thanks, Mer
LoriThey also have assessments for initial placement and annual progress for ELLS. I guess many states are joining so there will be a common language about levels and common standards.
I have a childhood 1-6 masters and have been teaching for 5 years in a NYC public school. I am looking to get an ESL extension and confused as to how to get one. Some people are telling me go through ITI program where the school pays for it but in return I have to switch my lic which I don't want to do. Then I was told just take some required courses but no one is being clear as to what those "required courses" are for NYC. Can anyone help? Thanks Malisa
I need to interview-ask 10 questions to an ELL teacher. I have not had luck with getting hold of the ELL teacher at our school. I can email you the questions and need the answers by tomorrow morning.
