So, are these students able to construct paragraphs yet (or maybe they can write basic 3-paragraph essays)? Depending on their proficiency, I think it would be helpful to have them research a culture of their interest and write something about their culture of interest. Then some peer-editing can happen, though you might want to remove names from the papers and provide guidelines because I know they'll be somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of peer feedback. I've found that some freedom with the topic yields some extra motivation.

My name is Victor Santos and I am a PhD student in Applied Linguistics and Technology at Iowa State University.
I am currently working on a (soon-to-be) computer- adaptive test of productive and contextualized knowledge of English academic vocabulary, on an Aptis grant from the British Council. This test, whose main intended uses will be for self-assessment, ESL placement, and as a diagnostic, will be the first test of its kind in case its feasibility and validity is supported through this research. I am currently in the item calibration stage (pre-adaptive version), and am looking for non-native speakers of English who either already are or intend to be a student at an English- medium college/university. Previous students who have taken the test indicate they have benefited and learned substantially from taking the test.
Every test taker who completes the test will be placed in three drawings for $100 each ($300 total will be awarded for this batch of participants, which is the first of three). For each of your students who takes the test and indicates YOUR email address at the beginning of the test (there is a field for that), your own email address will also be entered into the three drawings for $100. Selection of the three winners will take place one month from now.

Conversation instructors will be expected to facilitate conversations with students from countries like Brazil, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East. The age of your students will vary. Unfortunately, I work at a school with an unstructured ESL program. As all teachers do, I am required to submit lesson plans, however during my first year as an ESL teacher my pulled my kids out and created my own plans. This year I am mainly pushing into the regular classroom. I have no idea what a lesson plan for this should look like. Can someone please provide some feedback/tips/sample lesson that can help me!
Hi Lori, I am an ESL teacher who also pushes in and OUT. I go by what the mainstream techer does and we also give them an ESL template to fill out each week. On the template, it has the subject, vocabulary to be taught, Unit, lesson number, etc. They fill it out and I just go by that. they also provide me with the weekly newletter. Easy! ...See MoreEven though there is only three weeks of school left, I am still getting new arrivals. We have gotten five in the past couple of weeks. I now have three very distinct groups in my beginning ESL class. The bottom level know only a handful of words. The middle group arrived toward the begging of the year, and the top group arrived last year.
I am going crazy. I only have them for 43 minutes 97th- 11th graders). While I am working with one group, nothing hardly is getting done, in the other. The new students are so needy, most having only 3-4 years of schooling.
I feel like I am ignoring the upper level kids. I give them work to do, and work with them for a ten minutes or so. THey rush through the work and then want to sit and talk.
Oh wow.I think we have the same jobs. Usually instead of splitting the class into their separate fluency levels - which definitely has its place as well. - I will teach the same lesson, but change things up for each level.
For instance, if we are studying regular present tense in the 2nd level, I will take the first level through some regular verbs and stress the regularities, For the second group, I will teach them the regular forms and have them do more writing on their own.
The upper group could have some irregular verbs to work on.
Same topic, three levels, they find the answers, and I stroll around monitoring their progress.
