Sorry to bother anyone, but we are required to ask these in order to do a paper. I tried to take answers that were already given to similar questions. If you have the time and willingness to answer, THANK YOU!!

What is the best training? I know people who have taught a language other than English, who learned the target language as L2, who can recite all the current rhetoric, and yet glaze over and seem to not have a clue regarding English language acquisition, particularly at the lower proficiency levels. There are some very good ESL teachers who are not bilingual because they have good common sense, people sense, are empathetic, and are able to "get inside students' skin or head." This last quality is essential to being able to figure out how a student is processing aspects of language to have a starting point from which to help students over obstacles. Personally, I am trilingual (no, not Spanish), and it is frequently a reference point in identifying with students' thinking and generally how they are experiencing their school life. Although I am retirement age (still teaching), I believe I was already a very capable teacher many years ago because of the traits I mentioned above. I hope to have my Ph.D. within the year, but that level of education is neither necessary for being a capable ESL teacher, nor does it guarantee such an outcome. While it enriches one's repertoire to know many methodologies, the over-emphasis on methodology in recent years has caused as much harm as good.

I will comment also on question 25. Please bear in mind that if I say children need to be held, you would not apply that principle to the expectation that a sixth grader would sit on the teacher's lap. However, a sixth grader is a child. This is what is happening in ESL. Even people within the field speak of English learners as if there is such a thing as a "generic ELL," when in fact great differences dictate differing approaches. The various levels of proficiency are pivotal in what works best. Approaches which are effective for Level 1 students are completely different from what works for Level 4 students. A level 4 student has much English from which to build. A Level 1 student's cup is empty, and needs to have it filled before s/he can effectively share sips from the cups of classmates and give sips from his/hers.

If I were a parent of a special ed student today, I would be raising the roof over the noise in the modern classroom. Many classrooms are way too noisy, and this is encouraged by the style of teaching that is pushed by administrators. Then bring in the ELLs, who are just learning to hear and speak English sounds, and who cannot hear clearly, and what you have is a real mess. Psychologists, ENT M.D.'s, and parents who can comprehend this need to get on the ball here and take a look at this. Noise, per se, is not the issue. The push to have several teachers with several sets of noise is what is problematic. While there are certainly times that co-teaching can be enjoyable for all concerned (I've experienced this), the attempt to make every class segment co-teaching/push-in is not something that is unrealistic in the sense that we should feel apologetic and defensive. It is unrealistic in the sense that it is inappropriate and detrimental.
