Hi; I teach an EO 4th grade, however, most of these students attended K-3 in a bilingual classroom (Spanish-speaking students, coming from Spanish-speaking households with limited use of English outside of the classroom). We're working on writing paragraphs, but they aren't yet able to self-edit (they don't really know how to apply grammar rules and their spelling is still a Spanish/English combination). Here's my question...how much editing should I be doing? Should I let their writing stand as written, or, should I be their editor? With misspelled words, should I supply the correct spelling, or, underline misspelled words and have them look them up? I have 30 students and I'm really struggling with the best way to help move their writing forward. I appreciate any suggestions you might have.
