Key Phrases For Gujarati ESL Student

I am looking for key phrases or anything else that would help me with one of my ESL students that speaks Gujarati. He is still in a semi-silent period and I know that this is normal. However, he still has problems understanding some basic commands. He is completely lost in his classroom and his teachers are worried about him. His teachers would like me to provide them with a list of key phrases to help him along... Any ideas...

Found another one in my files, with Gujarati script this time:

good morning = સુપ્રભાત (shubh prabhaat) how are you? = કેમ છો (kem chho) what is your name? = તમારું નામ શું છે? (tamaru naam shum chhe) my name is... = મારું નામ...છે (maaru naam... chhe) I don't understand = સમજણ પટતી નથી (samajana palatii nathii) goodbye = આવજો (avajo) study = ભણવું ask = પૂછવું understand = સમજવું speak = બોલવું question = સવાલ answer = જવાબ lesson = પ્રકરણ homework = ઘર કાર્ય test = ટેસ્ટ

I would also recommend a picture dictionary for him - I think Oxford Picture Dictionary may even have an English-Gujarati edition (and definitely does have an English-Hindi edition), but an English-only picture dictionary would work fine as well. Using a few words in his language can help to make him feel more comfortable and can be helpful in emergencies, but for the most part, rather than you learning words in Gujarati, the focus should be on him learning the words in English. Is he your only Gujarati-speaking student?
