I am a tutor currently tutoring 2 ESL brothers from Puerto Rico. Their English level is on the low side, but they are learning. I have no problems getting the young one ( 'E,' in second grade) to use English during his session. The older one, 'C' (4th grade), uses almost entriely Spanish during my sessions. (Fortunately, he understands better than he speaks.)

Part of me wonders whether I really should pick this battle. On the other hand, he does need to practice if he is ever going improve his English. It think that at least some of it is that he is afraid.

What do you vetran ESL teachers suggest?
