I never heard that expression and have lived in the US for 70 years. Maybe it is common in a different part of the country but it does make sense to me. I assume it refers to working 6 days a week and taking the Sabbath off as said in the Bible. In other words, giving it a full week's worth of work. There are numerous English expressions which have roots in the Bible.
