After 30 years on the island grocery scene, Alex Campbell
of Central Saanich has sold his Thrifty Foods chain of
grocery stores to Stellarton N.S. based Sobey's Inc.
Founded in 1977 as an individual store in Victoria,
Thrifty Foods has since grown and expanded to a total of
20 stores up and down Vancouver Island and as far east as
Coquitlam on the Lower Mainland. The sale is expected to
close in November pending regulatory approval. No jobs are
expected to be lost and no stores closed as a result of
the sale.
