I usually bring along an end of a day reward for a class if they have a good day. What kinds of games, activities, etc. would motivate 5th graders to have a good day? What would they enjoy doing as an end of day reward? Thanks!

My fifth graders love to perform. We do charades with vocabulary words, create improvisational skits based on situations drawn from a box, and turn our lit book into short skits. Our school gives out blue tickets for good behavior, so if the class is working along with me and I were substituting I would hand out blue slips. These are turned in to the teacher of record so one can be drawn for a prize from the prize drawer in the classroom.
They also like detective stories, so sometimes we play a "who done it" mystery. There are many short "who done it" books on the market. I read one of the selections aloud, and they turn in a slip indicating their name and who they think did it. Once the slips are in, I announce the answer and tell the evidence that led to the correct conclusion.
Finally, I am lucky enough to teach in a very high performing school where the kids excel at math. Believe it or not, they love using white boards in teams to work upper grade math problems. We go over how to work the problems after each one, and the team captains become the teacher who goes through how they solved it. Sometimes we do the same thing with SS or Science to review the lesson from that day.
I have a pretty good idea of some of the things I would like to try, but would love to hear other ideas.
Also, if you don't know about Donors Choose you should check it out. It is a great site for educators that want to try new things in their classrooms with the help of anonymous donors! Hey, you can even help my class out if you want!! [link removed]
The last day of testing I lined the kids up intending to walk the tests and kids over to the office, where I'd leave the tests, and then we'd all go out to the playground as I had yard duty. One of my 5th grade boys looked at the box of tests and politely asked, "Would you like me to carry that for you?" "Sure," I replied as he hefted it. One second later I realized what I'd done and grabbed it out of his poor little hands. Oops.

I have a wonderful book for girls about the Oregon Trail titled Bound for Oregon, but I need something geared for fifth grade boys. Fifth or sixth grade reading level is what I am searching for. Please share any recommendations. Thank you for your help!
dan4thgrI looked at book wizard and found roughly 40 books on the Oregon Trail. Go to bookwizard.scholastic.com and put Oregon Trail in the quick search and then narrow from there. This is my favorite find-a-book site, easy and free

dan4thgrSince you teach music, the academy awards show the teacher in this blog does at the end of the year might be changed into the Grammy awards and be held in the day, not night. This will give them plenty of fun work to do, plus have them focus on what they have learned about music and themselves. Might work for you.
