Has anyone ever organized any of the sight word lists in a way other than grade level specific? I am asking because our district uses the DRA and all first graders should be at a 16 by the end of the year. Would it make more sense to spend time on the sigh words that would help a child read a DRA level 10 successfully in January and then a level 16 in June? We are not suggesting teaching to the test, but figuring out a way to help the students be successful since our district does not want to hear any excuses from teachers. It doesn't matter if you have four ELL students, three or four special ed. students, and/or students with major attendance issues. So as teachers we have to come up with a solution and we were wondering if anyone has figured out how to teach sight words and/or Dolch Phrases so to help students become readers at a faster pace and meet DRA benchmarks at the beginning, middle, and end of the year?

JazzyM Well, one way that really helps kids get motivated to learn them is to use Rainbow Words. You can organize the words in whatever order you want. The kids try harder because they want to move up each color level. It's easier to understand if you look at the picture.

grace Go to theschoolbell.com this a great resource for dolch words!! I have used it for years and she has broken done each list into a smaller list of the five words that are used the most. We have decided this year to focus on the sight words as our vocabulary/word wall words. Good luck!
