I just found out that I am going to teach math only to all the 4th graders next year. I am so excited! Is anyone else doing this? I would love to share ideas with someone. Our 5th grade has blocked for many years...but never the 4th grade!

I teach math to Grades 4 and 5. I have found the site below a godsend this year and best of all there are no costs involved like a lot of other sites that charge a subscription fee or charge you for each download.
dan4thgrSubscribe to the free group mathmatters3-4 at Yahoo groups. They have all kinds of materials, plans, websites, etc. Another great resource. groups.yahoo.co
I have some students who are not responding to small group interventions in Language Arts. Our school uses Storytown. I do the small group interventions with them. What else do I need to do within the program? Am I using Storytown incorrectly? How do others use it to support struggling learners? Bill

We like to have a theme to pump up our kids for state testing each year. We did "Rock the Test" last year, all centered around rock-n-roll. Does anyone have an idea of what we could use this year?
That's such a great idea that it would be hard to beat." Maybe Rock The Test Two" and make it an annual rock fest - there are annual rock fests and jazz fests. "Woodstock II" etc.
Beat The Test - nothing is as good as 'Rock The Test'!It's not threatening, it's fun and it's confidence building. You all should write it up, copyright it - it's a great theme.
I am teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grade reading only next year. I want to teach the genres from novels. Could you suggest some good books to cover the Michigan glces? Thanks
dan4thgrI'm not sure what the glces is since I'm not from MI, but I do know that my go-to source for finding books is Book Wizard. You can search by interest level, lexile, grade level, guided reading, and DRA. We all have our favorite books, but this gets us out to books that we aren't familiar with.
I know in our district we can do a report and the sub can be banned from the school for such offenses. I would go to the teacher first and see if the sub may have left notes in regard to this situation. I have no idea why a student would be made to sit there and not given the opportunity to change. As a teacher and parent I can understand your outrage and need for explanation. Unless the school is informed they cannot address it

I hope this sub was brand new to the school and the sub > should not be allowed to sub again unless the sub agrees to > apologize to your daughter and to you I totally agree to the "problem solving" solution. Playing devil's advocate - students often take advantage of a substitute teacher and it is unfortunate that this happened to your daughter. I've seen students pull about everything possible with a sub and sometimes the result is an unfortunate experience with the students trying to do as they should but the sub has to draw the line somewhere. I would hope that working with the classroom teacher and substitute that this could be avoided in the future.
I was told exactly the same thing last year except that I would be teaching writing. 5th grade was already departmentalized. I hated it! After two months, we switched back to a traditional classroom. Lesson planning was a breeze, but checking and grading papers sucked! Good luck with that.
