It takes three 6-week sessions to get the requisite 30 hours of coursework, plus time for the 25-page critique of a literary work. I have been both to Spain and Mexico under this program, and while I don't object to the reading, which is broadly based, I do lament that it is a program whose purpose can only be viewed as preparation for a Ph.D., since it has dropped the 'teaching emphasis option'. Universities are missing the opportunity to fill the real need for secondary teachers, which is more information which can be readily used in the classroom. The current literary approach is mostly irrelevant to that purpose. Although the culture and history of Spain and Mexico are available, it would be better to have evem more exposure and to include the other Spanish- speaking countries, as well, and much more emphasis on culture, grammer, and techniques applicable to the vast majority of teachers who enroll in this program whose only goal is better preparation for the classroom.

I was so looking forward to getting back together with many of my tnet buddies and meeting some new ones this June. But I have had to cancel my reservations for the hotel since I won't be able to come to the gathering. Unfortunately, I need to save both my vacation time and expenses to spend some time in Florida with fall when my newest grand daughter will be born. She is medically fragile and I want to be there for her birth and hopefully the surgery that will help her survive. She has a diaphragmatic hernia and there is a doctor there who is well known for his sucess with this problem. So we are moving my daughter down there for a few months and her husband, daughter and the rest of the family will be commuting once she is stable. I am very sad at the prospect of not seeing any of you this summer but this is essential. Love to all and hope this is a much better attended gathering than the last one that I went to in NC.....Only 3 of us showed up .. but we did have a grand time anyway! Tina AKA Noah

Hello everyone i just wanted to remind all of you that this Friday May 28th is the deadline for registering with the Comfort Inn and Suites Hotel in Springfield Mass in order to benefit from the Tnet Group Rate of $67 a night. Please when booking your hotel room tell them that you are with the Teachers Net Group, this is very important as then you will benefit from the group rate. The Hotel phone number is 413 736 5000 I will soon be writing to request a head count to see how many people roughly we have coming to the Gathering. A reminder that the Gathering dates are June 28th to July 2nd.
Dave, From reading the earlier posts, the following people thought they'd attend, but I'm just going by what is posted on this board:
Bluette. Manhere. bette, mr. bette, pooh bear, Yonder. Mary K/MA. I THOUGHT SCGal hoped to come, but I didn't catch a post confirming that.
also, mobee was polling about all 3 gatherings, asking people to sign up under each of her posts saying she'd start the list and I took that to mean she was attending all 3, but it appears she might not be coming to Springfield after all.
You and Carolyn did a good job getting information out early, accommodating the dates of the other gatherings that have formed, then posting reminders and enthusiastic encouragement to t-netters in hopes they'd gather to enjoy all the area has to offer. Thank you for all that work!

I ATTEMPTED to check Skippy's suggestion.. At La Quinta, I spent 15 minutes speaking to a recording, and never got an actual person. At the Econolodge Maingate Hawaiian, I spoke with Kelly in group, who stated they could give us a rate of $45.00 a night. Skippy has stayed at the hotel before and said it was very nice. The La Quinta Inn was nice as well, but I could never get an actual person. I will try there again later.

Hello everyone i regret to inform all of you that the Springfield Mass Gathering scheduled for June 28th to July 2nd has been officially cancelled. We just do not have the numbers who have committed to coming.
Has any kind of itinerary been developed for the Maggie Valley Get-Together? DH and I were thinking about coming up, but we can't stay the entire time, so we'd kind of like to know what's being planned and when so we can determine what would be the best time for us to drive up. If someone could e-mail me, I'd appreciate it.
Ditto what Nelda said...I don't have a husband...lol...but I have my sister, Faye...

This get together is nowhere near as well planned as the one in Cherokee was back in 1998. Bet you figured that out huh?
Speaking for myself, I plan to stay at the Castlewood Inn in maggie Valley. There are a number of eating establishments within walking distance, so I will pick one tomorrow morning and post that information here. As far as an agenda, here is what I had in mind:
23 - get together dinner
24 - rafting on the Nantahala River (I have YET to get over those falls the right way in 32 bleeping years!!!!)
25 - Either go to the Outdoor Drama "unto these hills" in Cherokee or sample some of the night life in maggie Valley.
After that it will depend on personal preferences and on how many are in attendance!!!
Hi.. K.. you can make reservations after Monday. Kelly is sending me the contract, and once I sign it and email it back to her, she'll give me a phone number and group number so that you can make your reservations. The way we arranged it, since several weren't sure about arrival/departure dates, was Kelly has reserved 5 rooms each day for us. (2 of those are for Cher and Skippy) that leaves us 3 more rooms on each day. I've heard several say they'd be there for part of the time.. SOO.. What we need to do, AS SOON AS you know which days you'll be there and need a hotel room (with the exception of Skippy and Cher, I've got y'all already), if we need MORE than the 5 OR less, I need to let Kelly know to adjust it. Even with us doing it this way, she said we'll still receive the $35.00 a night group rate. I've told her each person will reserve their own rooms, so as soon as I get the phone number, and group number, I'll forward that to you and you can reserve your room. Sorry it took me longer to do this than I expected, but the past few days have been really hectic. I had several appointments to take care of with my aunt, and tutoring, and didn't get home until after Kelly was gone for the day. SOO give me til Monday, then you're all set for booking.. THANKS!!
