There is a great new childrens chapter book out titled, The Treasure to Health and Happiness. It authored by a primary school teacher and it is truly inspriational. I read it cover to cover and it inspired me as an adult even though it is a childrens book. The imagery is powerful and beautiful. Trust me you've never heard healthy foods soound so appealing! The author is Carol Goodrow and she previously wrote a book titled, Happy Feet, Healthy Food. It has been used by schools ,running clubs, and even our local Recreation Department. Check it out on her website- Kids Running! I would highly recommend it!

I am the Chair of a university health sciences program in Jersey City. The teacher of health program is dying due to widespread practice of hiring teachers with dual certification. Our program does not have physical education and therefore the program is dying. New York City is hiring health teachers due to their new health curriculum. However, NJ certification is different from NY certification. If our program does not have students the department will have to stop the teacher of health program.

I was a health teacher in a high school for 6 years and due to budget cuts- my position was eliminated. It looks to me like health education is a dying thing...yet there is so much need for it.
All the positions are part time or health/pe...any insight or help from anyone?
You are quite correct. I think the reality is that most schools are facing serious budget cuts from the federal government. This could be as a result of the war or other priorities. In any case, the education systems in many states have to cut jobs to save money. I guess health education is one of them

My state (WV) is increasing Health and Physical Education. This school year state wide all schools are being required to add time to the school day to accomadate a directive from the state to increase activities - increase health knowledge and assesments and increase awareness of nutrition and its effects on their daily lives. Although the teaching positions are limited for the number of students we have - our school system has recently hired and cut in other areas. Sounds like we are lucky.
Please check out a new educational dvd designed to teach kids about the real dangers of alcohol abuse. The movie is called Death by Alcohol: The Sam Spady Story. You can get it real cheap at [link removed]

Nickey,
I may be teaching health in addition to PE this coming school year so I jotted down info about the video and pulled up the website. Also I have some nieces doing this kind of stuff (yeah, I used to do it, too) so the story, and it's value as a teaching tool to others, interests me. I'm going to suggest my sister-in-law buy it for her five daughters, all between the ages of 16 and 24. Is that a workload or what? Thanks for posting this valuable resource.
