Is anyone using the New Holt Rinehart series - Decisions for Health??? Need help with. Middle school level... I am having a hard time keeping my students busy...
When I taught health and later when I was in charge of the school library I found that the students enjoyed the cooperative learning lessons I did with them.
Divide the class up into groups. Assign each group a topic. Within each group assign different activities. One student used a computer, another encyclopedia, others used library health books, pamphlets and periodicals and then one or two worked on an art project that went along with the theme. (We did cooperative learning activities for Dental Health, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Hygiene etc.). Each group then had to present their findings to the class.

This is my first year teaching. I'm a 43 year old who changed careers. For the past 20 years I worked in a health-related field (not nursing, not patient care). I always thought I wanted to teach so I got my certification (I'm in Texas)and now teach kindergarten. My opinion at this moment is that this is definitely not the grade level I want to be at. I want kids who are independent, can carry on a conversation, etc. I do like the medical field and find health and medical topics to be very interesting. I have looked at the sample questions that are on the certification exam given in texas for Health EC-12. I find that the questions are about topics I'm interested in, as well as know about because of my past career. Am I crazy for thinking of moving from kindergarten to junior high or high school?. I always thought the person who teaches health would be a nurse. Is this incorrect? I'm pretty sure that at the elementary level it's the school nurse who teaches health-related topics. Any advice/opinions? Again, I'm in Texas so things may be different in other parts of the country. Thanks.
Can anyone give some advice about taking the EC-12 Health exam? I teach science normally, but have no Phys ed experience. Do have to know a lot of rules to different games? that worries me
I presently use Glencoe Health for high school kids and an antiquated Prentice Hall; Health: Skills for Wellness for my 7th and 8th graders. Wondering what other publishers are used? Any feed back is vital as I will need to get some of the published books to begin review.

Using Holt/Rinehart/Winston Decisions for Health grades 5-8 Chose because it had the most up to date info - esp. the Nutrition Chap - with the New Pyramid. Like the "extras" that came with the series - Puzzlemaker, Reading CD's, Games. Do not like that there are not many worksheet type of lessons to use as reteaching.
The ones that are there are easy - but tedious to grade. Still working that out. I have used Glencoe in the past - like it too! Don't the companies send you all the books available in your state for adoption? Mine does...

Still learning the procedure on books, thanks for the insight.
Does anyone have any free Health Praxis Study Guides or USED ones at low cost? I really need to pass this exam. Most websites are $30 or more. Thank You
