My name is Kevin and I am in the 4th grade. I received first prize in school for this essay and I thought that I would send it to you because my mom used to be a teacher in the public schools.
WHAT I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW UP
My mom taught me always strive to reach my full potential. She has been a good example of this because she always seemed to be doing a hundred and one things at once and always seemed to enjoy what she was doing. I always thought that she was kind of hyper. She is a musician and always had private students, was always playing piano in some restaurant, performing in recitals and weddings, and having recitals for her kids. My mom always seemed to be a happy person and taught me that you could always be looking forward to the ‘NEXT THING’. She was always ready to learn something new. For her it was going back to school. She went to school everyday for 10 years, since 1994 – a hour and a half commute from home! Rehearsing in the college orchestra 2 days a week from 8:00-10:00 am – 2 days a week. School was even fun for her! Then she even taught kids at night and studied to the wee hours of the night. I went to her performances at school. Although my mom is way over 40, she had a philosophy that was all her own. Instead of asking the question, “What would you do if you knew you would die tomorrow?, she asked, “What would you do if you would live forever?” So that’s why she went back to school with 18-year olds and how she got her Masters Degree at her age.
When she was a substitute teacher, I got to see her conduct band concerts, string concerts and even choir concerts! She saved a lot of dead-head music programs at the last minute by putting on great concerts! We collected pictures, videos and scrapbooks! The kids and the parents loved her. Then she finally got her first real job in the public schools. That’s when it all went downhill. At first even had beginning students playing Mozart and Pachebel in many, many concerts, and the parents were pleased as punch, and gave her gifts and flowers. We have happy memories, videos of concerts, festivals and awards. More happy parents!
Enter the new superintendent who just wanted keep the budget low. He knew substitutes were a lot cheaper, and said that earning “tenure” was a thing of the past. She was fired without a thought except that she was unnecessary fluff in the education system. She was just a teacher that got placed on the wrong pile of papers, so that they forgot to fire her before her expiration date. What they didn’t teach my mom in her education classes was that she was working for organized crime.
My mom didn’t really take it seriously, because at the time we trusted everybody. She still denied it when she got her termination notice and they zapped away our health insurance at the same time. We used to trust Principals, Superintendents, the Commissioner of Education, Labor Unions, Boards of Education and Labor Boards. Mom couldn’t wait to tell them about this! This new job took over my mom and all she did was write legal documents, day and night. She began to write to her Teacher’s Union, every public agency, Boards of Education, and all the above. Her every moment was spent writing, answering, petitioning, replying and going to hearings regarding her illegal firing! Yet she began to notice that there was great resistance to coming to any conclusion about any issue. And there was no legal justice. No one wanted to confirm the fact that she had rights. No one wanted to confirm the fact that a CRIME HAD BEEN COMMITTED. Although they all encouraged her to write, to open cases, to go through procedural hearings, and everyone pretended to be concerned, nobody made a decision in court hearings!!!! It soon became clear that this was intentional – and all were doing this for the purpose of covering up their criminal behavior! There was not just one agency. They were all connected – like a medley of malorderous malfeasance. No one person had to be accountable. Soon we came to the conclusion that all were connected in this Education System. It was a BIG BLOB!
When the superintendent fired my mom, it felt like an earthquake. Like the very ground that you stand on just gives way, only it’s people – the ones you once trusted all of your life - the Principals, the Superintendents, the Commissioner of Education – all the people that you thought supported you, just crumble like the earth beneath your feet. And you are left stranded and you don’t know where to look for help anymore. You rack your brain but cannot grasp the NEXT THING for you to do, to keep your life hopeful.
Everyday my mom and I would go to the mailbox to see if something has been resolved, maybe a decision from the Commissioner of Ed, since it’s been more than a year. He has documents, evidence and proof of all the crimes of the mob. But the only thing we get from him in the mailbox is a monthly payment bill for $30,000 from the Commissioner of Ed for her school loan that she needed to work for them so that they could ruin her life! Another scam! Another rip- off! I’d like to punch that guy’s lights out!
And that superintendent still works in that district and business is as usual. There are enough laws to protect him. He could have fired my mom legally and didn’t have to botch up her career and cause the taxpayers to pay a fortune in legal expenses! But the system even protects pin-heads like him! There is no consequence for the crime that he committed and what he did to my mother.
My mom used to be a happy person. She gave up all her restaurant gigs, and her private students so that she could work full time for a job that’s a proven scam, but the public does not want to believe this horror and would rather believe that she is incompetent. She wasted more than 12 years of her life and is expected to $30,000 school loan to a Commissioner who could have saved her job, but DIDN’T. She had to wait in the unemployment line to pay the rent, but now that’s all used up. We had to apply for Medicaid, and wait in that line too, so we can pay for the doctor. We don’t know what to do for the NEXT THING. She just sits and says that she doesn’t know what to do with her life now. She doesn’t play much music anymore, she only sits at the computer, her eyes are red and she never takes off her bathrobe.
When I grow up I’m going to have my kids home-schooled so they don’t get near any of this stuff. I want to keep my kids away from all of this, or else they might become like them. I’m going to become the first Criminal Lawyer who fights this kind of crime in the school system. I won’t just take more money from teachers like some other lawyers. That field is wide open, since no one has ever done that before. But I'm gonna get back at them for what they did to my mother! I’d have that superintendent in an orange jumpsuit and cuffs, just like their poster-boy Tassone, before he ever knew what happened to him. My mother always said that in life you should always have a mission. THAT is my mission, WHEN I GROW UP!
Is anyone else having problems being in a classroom of students marinating in fragranced products? Is your classroom making you sick? Do you need a Fragrance Free Environment? This is a huge problem for many teachers and students and it is getting worse with every new fragranced product that hits the shelf!

Due to fragrances being demonstrated and sold in our school by an assistant, I suddenly became ill. Later learning it was indeed her product and they caused anaphylatic reactions. I now have Reactive Airways and irritable larynx.
The school policy is no perfume worn by students, but there is no such policy for teachers and staff. Several staff members smoke and then stray. I can only guess what happens to their asthmatic students for I cannot bare to be around them. Do the parents of these students not have a right to demand these teachers stop? My room is as free of chemicals as I can get. My children put bookbags and coats in garbage. bags to cut down on perfumed car deodorants and parent smoke. I use low odor markers. I use unscented baby wipes to wipe the desk when children are present and unscent soap to wash them after school closes. I use no sprays. I have a charcoal filtered plug in odor control and have bought air purifier from home. I send out letters forbidding the use of scented products. If children come in highly scented, I call parents, send home more letters, send to nurse to change, or send to the principal. Parents sometimes can be so ugly about this matter as can other teachers. I wish there was a legislative rule that forbids perfumes and strong scents in schools. I've had to go to the ER twice because of the strong scents used by the custodians. Get this, I have an accommodation plan also.
