I'm going to have about 25 students, a mixture of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, to teach an hour and a half health lesson to while the rest of the students participate in Family Life. Any suggestions on how to make this time worthwhile? Are there health websites that you could suggest? Thanks.

Try out these websites... [link removed]
-This one really cracked me up. It's about eating fruits and vegetables [link removed]
-This one is about body weight and has a quiz at the end of it... [link removed]
-This is some kids' senior project video but I really liked it. I thought the message was good and it was also humorous. I would totally use it in the classroom. It is also about healthy food choices.
I am in 11 grade looking to teach 3-6 graders about eating and i can't find no good healthy song so if you can please email me with one i appreciate it Thanks Timmy Griffith
Thank you, Leah! Lots of good ideas! I appreciated your come- back. Here are a few we did this week: "Word-Find Hops" (After finding each word they would stand and then hop 5 times). "Planets Revolve" (after answering questions about the planets, students stand and revolve around their desk...some even rotated as they revolved! Today we used the playground and set out cones with signs representing the planets and sun.
Our morning and afternoon recesses have gradually been taken away (longer noon recess) and studies have been started to show more classroom discipline is needed because of the lack of physical activities.

Performance Indicator 3.8.2. of the National Health Education Standards says that middle school students should be able to access valid health information from home, school, and community. This especially includes accessing valid information on-line, so we teach how to find correct information about health on the Internet. That's another way that we incorporate technology into our class.

To The Tune of Paul Revere and the Raiders' Indian Reservation... Autism Nation
They took the whole autistic nation, and secluded us on this reservation. They took away our right to bang, and made us only want to hang. They took away our only ways to live and they never let us want to give.
Autistic People, Autistic pride...So Proud to live, so proud to die.
They took the whole autistic nation, shut all us all up in this reservation. They forced us into a secluded class while the bullies came and kicked our ass.
Autistic people, Autistic Pride...so proud to live so proud to die.
They took the whole autistic nation and locked us on this reservation and although I wear a suit and tie, i'm still an autie deep inside.
and when the NT's all have learned, Autistic Nation will return. WILL RETURN...WILL RETURN...WILL RETURN...WILL RETURN.
Next year I will be taking over a males position in the 5th grade. This is the year they get into the "sex" talk and human anatomy with the kids. They do it seperately with the boys and girls. The male teacher who I am taking over for obviously gave the male talk. I have no problem doing it but some people think we should ask one of the male gym teachers to have the talk with the boys. Should I do it or would it be more comfortable for everyone if I let one of the male gym teachers? Kathryn

Talk it over with the male gym teacher - he knows the school. In the ideal world, we should all be able to 'have the talk' but maybe in this first year you should observe him giving the talk even if he feels the school's parents and kids will be comfortable with a woman giving 'the talk'.
Separately is the most commonly misspelled word in my experience - we say it differently than it's really spelled.
I still remember the "sex talk" when I was in Fifth Grade. We had the same set up, the guys would go to the guy teacher and the girls to one of the many girl teachers. I'm not sure but our Guy teacher seem more embarrassed or awkward that we did. We really wanted to know. Of course, some of us were pretty silly and immature, but a few kids just smirked-- they'd already had sex so they acted like they were beyond it.
I can say this, I don't think it would have made a difference either way male or female teacher. But I think it would have made a big difference if we'd have been in the same class as the girls. In 5th grade, we boys were light years behind the girls when it came to maturity -- BUT we all knew what the parts were, thanks to magazines and not careful parents ... and HBO. I would have been totally distracted, however if a) a girl I liked was in the class, or b) I had a crush on the teacher.
Its funny how some of these thoughts and impressions linger.
I need an MTEL Health Education (21) Test Prep book and material to take the Massachusetts test for certification. does anyone know of any test prep book that would help?
