Do any of you know of any curricular materials, field trip experiences, classroom simulations, etc. that would help me make my 9th grade health class more true-to-life? I'm looking to make things as relevant and impactful on my students' lives as I can. Thanks--
You could start with the American Red Cross and ahve afield instructor teach some first aid with realistic looking wounds. some kids faint at the thought of blood others get intrigued. You could contact a local teaching hospital and find out if they have an OR theatre. Its alittle doing but many times when they have instructional operations you could take your class to watch that. contact your local diabetes treatment centers and get a Diabetic educator who has a godoamount of slides and props to show the results of diabetes( amputations, kidneys looking oogy etc) Department of health(CDC AND WHO) in washington has some old films of leprosey(still rampant), TB, Polio and other field films. Two great films if you can get it are Sister Kenny, she invented real Physical therapy as an outcome of the infantile polio epidemic(currently on the rise in south africa) And Dr. Erlichs Magic Bullet. A film bout the discovery of the first applicable antibiotic. You can get someone from the Coroners office or get the book " The Bone Farm" about forensics from the UTKnoxvilel Bone farm. Of course to get kids started you can always go Rotten.com. Though its a gross site you can see what decomposition and injuires and results of disease and health related issues. The government has an educational Liasian that can also help you if you need to be very delicate about what is shown and discussed. Julie

Children need to be able to "create" in order to maintain feelings of selfworth. The Big Yellow Box™ is a newly launched division (06/14/2004) of the Crayola Company and is in need of consultants who love to craft! The Big Yellow Box™ sells complete craft kits with full-color instructions that you create. I got in on the ground floor and you can too! My start up cost for complete Consultant's Kit, plus S/H was just $209.95!!!! My kit includes everything I need to begin catalog sales, fundraisers, and crafting parties. Join a successful team, get more information, and create success for yourself at [link removed]!

It's probably because in the U.S., the majority of students are on summer vacation. Most schools are closed right now. Try again in September.

I'm certified in Spanish, but I'm also teaching Health this fall in my first job since becoming certified. I'll be teaching health to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at a small school in a suburb of Chicago.
My problem is that now that I've received the District's Standards and Objectives, they are woefully outdated (the 80's) and are missing many of the required State standards and National Standards. There's nothing about violence prevention and self-esteem.
Who should I approach about this, and how should I go about proposing to update the district curriculum without ruffling feathers? Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
What a wonderful thing that you care enough about this to have looked into the standards. Good for you - your school is fortunate to have you.
As they don't seem to care enough to update their standards, I'd just teach in the classroom the topics and subjects that you think appropriate. If someone asks, - which likely they won't - smily warmly and say I assumed there were some pages missing from the district standards as they didn't match either the state or national standards. I just added on the topics of the missing pages.
Unless your district is very laid back, enlightened and mellow, I wouldn't say anything or do anything to try to get the district's standards rewritten. Teach there a while before you get into that sticky wicket.
Good luck. > > >

My husband are trying desperately to get pregnant with a girl. We have 2 boys. The myth I am hearing is to stop 3-5 days before ovulation. This month we have stopped 5 days out.
My question is: if the sperm can only last up to 72 hours. What can I do to enhance their life? Does exercise hurt them?

You would need to get a salary shedule from a local school district. In California, we have a scale that goes across based on the number of post bachelors units and a schedule that goes down for the number of years you've been teaching. I ahve no idea if our salary schedules are similar, but here, you'd start off between 30 and $40,000 depending on where you live.
Hey all, I am new at this board. usually hanging out at sub and tennessee chat. I was interested in reading the PCOS messages. When i was 4 I was dxd with borderline diabetes(MODY) and until I was 39 I was diet controlled. when I was 15 i awoke one morning with a beard and screamed. My mental attitude was changing. I was fortunate enough after going through biopsies and x rays and scans to be free of PCOS. My ovaires produce testosterone and estrogen, and are not cystic. What I have is calld ODH(ovarian dysfunction hirsuitism through genetic slip) I have a chromosome that has a mind of its own. as you know women have double XX. But in me, on ocassion one of its legs actually does mutate depending on the testosterone levels. We discovered it through a brazilian genetisist back in 1977. Lucky for me. I was fortunate enough to be placed and able to take Ortho novum 1/35. For 12 years I was on it, and though laparosocpies of the ovaries revealed I had zilch eggs, with that single hormone therapy and change in exercise and diet I had a twin set of eggs. Unfortunaetly I lost a twin due to toxic poisioning. But my surviving daughter is AWESOME! she is 15 and shows no signs of any genetic problems. Many doctors insist that I have PCOS because I have the beard. But for me it is a very wrong DX. The only thing I hate is the shaving but I have a great dermatologist that can get rid of the beard. I am fortunate that my pregnancy was theraputic and that now all I have is endometriosis and full blown ( yippie) diabetes. After doing much research we found that my genetic slip goes back to only two strains of peoples. So I have an interesting inheritive link to about 500 BC to a warring tribes in Northern Russia/Norway.
Another interesting note is that there is some speculation that MODY in children may cause PCOS and not the other way around. Un DXD diabetes as we all now can cuase major complications. So a thought is that children who were very large babies, mothers who were treated for gestational diabetes, or had other illnesses while pregnant, reactions to inocculations or illnesses that were serious may be a leading cause in PCOS, or children that were told they have syndrom X(still borderline people) or type 2 MODY diabetes. that PCOS is actually a resultant of an autoimmune disorder. where the body attacks the ovaries instead of other tissues. I know it was a long post but its nice to share with others who are in the same boat.
We are trying to get info to develop a wellness program that would not be just during PE Class for our students. Are there any grants out there/surveys/programs that anyone could share? Te
