I teach in Massachusetts and it's only health. Also I know most schools in Maine require health for each student in grades 7-9, so it requires a full-time posision. I noticed when looking that MANY states combine it! How wrong in my view...PE is one piece of health and should not be put together.

I am a 3rd grade teacher in New York and I am just writing to let the chatroom know about the company my son works for. It is a comprehensive PreK-12 health education publishing company. As a teacher I completly endorse the interactivity and vluable teaching options that the program provides. The company takes a different approach then do the textbooks to teach health. There are many activities that incorporate information gathering and then are built upon using activities to develop skills like critical thinking to put the information to good use. The program is a healthy alternative to the textbook approach to health, it is really one of the only companies to survive the health subject matter buy out by the larger textbook companies limiting the options that teachers have now on selecting materials. I strongly reccomend this program as I have thouroughly reviewed it and give it my full backing. If you need more information please check out the website or e-mail the company, I have provided both in the headers of this post. Thank you

I am planning a lesson on Substance Abuse...I am going to make it a combination of Refusal Skills, Decision-Making Process, and Peer Pressure...aside from the factual information on the different types of drugs and their effects on the body...I would love to have any input...
I have an idea that you could use for the Refusal Skill lesson. When I teach refusal skills, I first lecture on what it is and the steps to use when saying no. After the explanation I give each student a small slip of paper with a saying on it, for instance, "Everybody's doing it." Each slip has a different saying on it that relates to the pressure to do the drug. Each student must read their slip of paper to three different students. In return they must practice the refusal skill to three different students. This is a good way to practice the refusal skill itself. The students must use the steps discussed in the lecture in responding to their peer. Although, it is awkward at first it does get them thinking about what they could do if ever in the situation.

hello- I am hoping someone will have useful info for me. I am graduating with a B.A. in psych this may, I am strongly interested in becoming a health educator. I have search far and wide for health education graduate programs at california universities, but have found nothing. What is the process to become a health educator? What universities off the program?? I would appreciate any info available. -Kate
Important to know about the Health Program at TC, CU. They are not changing their cirriculum to comply with the new standards for accrediation. This means that if you graduate from there a few years from now you will not be eligible to get your CHES. Also, the program is not accomodating to those looking to get there certification to teach. Other then that, there are some excellent professors with the program.

Hi there,
Look on the APHA website or the Association of Schools of Public Health for an accredited program - I've heard good things about UCLA and USF...CHES is the certification program. CA is a great state for public health jobs! I graduated from NMSU with an MPH and found many job opportunitites in CA (but ended up in TX because that's where my family lives). An MPH is a great degree...good luck!
Hello. I have a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from using inhalants also known as huffing (and I'm Not looking for pity, just stating the facts as they are ;) I got a brain injury from huffing at age 12 (I'm now 32) and Ive been trying to warn others of the dangers and destruction that can certainly happen. I have permanent damage to my brain and bone marrow (fatty inner lining of bones) and deal with many many problems. I posted a message on the yahoo message boards under the "Dads" parents section but I can either email you a copy of my message that I've been sending to yahoo groups or I can try to type it here :) And even though I write coherently, I have so many problems and damage, that when I try to have a conversation with someone, it's obvious that I have problems with memory loss, word-finding problems (finding the right words when wanting to speak, even simple ones) and general communication problems.
It would be great if you could print out a copy and show it to your students! So please feel free to email me at [email removed]
