I usually walk two miles three times a week. I went out with my friend this morning in the glorious sunshine and we walked three and quarter miles on the prairie path. It felt wonderful! I do have a question for all of you that have walked off weight. When you started out did you start with six miles or did you work your way up? Since I was walking two miles should I increase the number of miles I walk each time or the number of times I walk? I really want to stay with it and get these extra unhealthy pounds off. These have really helped tone my arms and upped the activity level of my walks. I love them

No, the park I walk in is 2.9 mi all the way around. It also has a sledding hill which is approx. 50 ft high. When I started last Aug. I walked 15 min out and 15 min back for a total of 30 min. I did this for only 2-3 days. Then once I sensed that I wasn't going to keel over from exertion, I started walking all the way around. It took about 50 -55 min. I did that for a week or so and then started adding the hill....up and down 3X. And I continued that for probably a month before gradually adding more times up and down the hill....I went to 5X, then to 8X, then 10X and for the last couple of months...12X up and down. When it's not windy I walk from home to the park and back. It's about 1/2 mile away. I determined that walking from home, walking all the way around, 12X climbing the hill, and walking home took 90 min so even when I drive to the park, I walk 90 min. I walk about 65-67 steps per min on one foot x 2 (for both feet) x 90 min = about 12,000 steps. A site online told me that 12,000 steps translates into about 6 miles. I've hit a plateau though for the last few months and after the 45 lb loss cannot seem to lose the last 8 lbs or so I'd like to lose. But I feel wonderful. Thankfully I was never on any drugs except synthroid for low thyroid and Prilosec for heartburn or GERD. I no longer need the Prilosec, but I guess weight doesn't have much to do with needing the thyroid med. I haven't been to the doctor in well over a year though and that visit was just because I had pneumonia. I do need to go and get a "well" check up.
Good Luck to you, Kathy.
Some tips to anyone who asks me about losing weight: Make that daily exercise the first thing you think about when you wake up as like "When will I walk (bike, go to the gym, swim, lift weights etc etc) today? Decide the WHEN and then piece your day around that and stick to that decision every day. Also, cut what you currently eat in half, eating very little sugar and limiting your carbs (esp. the "white stuff". And, I never use a full size plate. I put my food on a luncheon plate for dinner and a saucer size plate for lunch.

starrshine,
I'm just wondering how using ski walking poles tones your arms and ups the activity level? Is it the weight of the poles themselves and thus when you naturally swing your arms you are lifting more than simply the weight of your arms or am I missing some other advantage?
