Positive reinforcement

One thing that I found that works in my classroom is positive reinforcement. I have many students with behavioral issues and I can go an entire period reprimanding student after student for inappropriate behavior. What I do now is quietly walk around the room with raffle tickets. I place them on the desks of students doing the right thing. At the end of the period, I pull a ticket and allow the winner to select a prize. Sometimes it is a homework pass or five points on a test, other times it is something they can pick out of a basket. I pick up thing at the dollar store or in the clearance aisles at stores. I never thought it would work so well. My “hard core” students will practically do backflips to get a ticket.
