I feel like by high school, if a kid chooses to fail a class that's their problem and I'm not going to go out of my way to motivate them. I think with younger kids it makes sense to find out what the issues are, but in high school the consequences of slacking off are fairly immediate- they won't graduate, or they lose credits. If a kid refuses to work and either sleeps in class or plays with their phone, how many of you will just ignore them (assuming they're not being disruptive) and how many of you will bug them to get something done?

Lynne in TN I make the kids take notes and do their classwork. If they will not do it when I point-blank tell them to do it I have them put in ISS and they can do it there. The problem I have is that kids with truancy issues won't do makeup work.

Catsister I've rarely seen a kid who's disengaged who's not disruptive. I actually have the opposite problems--kids who will (more or less) do the work but are raucous, chatty with each other or over-ask questions (either they are premature, repetitive, or trying to get hints or the answer from me). They also spend a lot of time begging for free- time, movie...See More

Erin In my small, rural school, we probably baby too much, but we don't just let kids slack. We are expected to contact parents, and that often will have some results, depending, of course on the student and family situation. If the kid is still slacking, I also will contact our principal, who may also call parents and/or set up a meeting with parents/s...See More
