Over the years we've had a few students who've applied to college as juniors. Many have gotten in and gone off to college without finishing high school. Not every college will consider the application of juniors but two of our students entered MIT after their junior year, another went to U. Penn and some to places like U. Boston, U. Maryland, Rensselaer and Drexel.

This upsets some of my colleagues every time it happens. Some refuse to write recommendations for even their best students if they are going to apply as juniors. Some think they're 'cheating', beating the system or not paying their dues.

Clearly I don't but I wondered what some of you might think. I'm always baffled at the huge emotional response this brings and the things that have sometimes been said. "So you want to be a high school dropout!?" (this was said to one of the kids admitted to MIT...)

maureen Steve: I don't understand your staff's reactions either. Maybe they feel like they are losing out for personal reasons due the brightest students skipping ship early?
