This link will provide you with a plethora of information on the brain. Everything from creativity, to self-therapy, to proper nutrition for the brain.
Socrates said: 'Physician heal thyself first' or something to the affect. That being the case then as educators we must first clean out the cob-webs of our own craniums before we can truly expect our students to reach the stars. A lot of the work here was used extensively from 1960-1990, and taught college students basic Brain Self-Control.
You're absolutely right in that you have to go to the places where the shortages are.
Come to Maryland or Virginia...I hire teachers for a living and we are ALWAYS looking for HQ teachers who truly care for children, have good references and are well- trained. You can visit the state DOE websites to see our critical shortage areas. If you are a good teacher, you can find a job in MD or VA. We pay well, we have great benefits and the quality of life is good here. We hire more than 50% of our new secondary and special ed teachers from out of state. Teachers from PA, OH, MI and NY flock to our school systems and have great success.
However, let me add the caveat that even in tight times, we still want excellent teachers. I can assure you that there are some folks out there who have been applying to teach for our school system for the past 3-4 years but who I will never hire. If they cannot relate to kids, if they don't have good classroom management skills, if they cannot present a lesson to our standards and if they have only 'average' references, I won't be hiring them -- even in critical shortage areas.
Also, if you are an elementary teacher...you're right. There isn't a shortage...even in the areas that have huge critical shortages in other subjects. My advice...work on getting an endorsement in another subject area...or think of moving.
A group of UCSD students started a tutoring club when they realized how difficult and expensive private tutors are. They began the company with one goal: to equip students for success by matching them with the best tutor.
Our team strives to match personality and academic needs because we know that tutoring goes beyond homework help. We want to be great role models. Be confident that an entire team is working hard to help your student succeed.

As a physician, my interest was in psychological recovery from trauma/abuse; my PhD dissertation was "A Neurobiological Theory and Method of Language Acquisition," which was published under the same title by LinCom Europa.
I advanced the specialized theory to one addressing teaching/learning in general which was published as "Unlock the Genius Within: Neurobiological Trauma, Teaching and Transformative Learning" (Rowman & Littlefield).
Currently I'm working with the neurobiology of teaching and learning with special emphasis on contemporary teaching and transformative learning pathways (they are neurobiologically different and incur different assets and liabilities).
Transformative learning (curiosity-based, discovery-driven, mentor-assisted) is of great interest to me and I'm working on a book describing a plausible neurobiological pathway as well as it characteristics and application in the classroom now. I look forward to hearing from educators with similar interests.
I'll be hosting a web-Chat on Teacher's Net on June 29 from noon to 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (USA).
