I am returning to a position in a large (600 students) public school in an affluent community. I was the library teacher there for 2 years, was laid off last year, and the position reopened and I will return in September, hopefully for a long time. My situation was unique in that I had a classroom off of the library. I was able to teach all my lessons in the classroom. Now, the classroom has been lost as it is being taken over by special ed. From previous positions, I am used to teaching in library spaces without a classroom, however, this library space is surrounded by 6 very noisy 4th and 5th grade classrooms full of students who are in and out for specials, bathroom, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cut down the noise level? From what I understand, the classroom teachers have not been very good at getting their students to be quiet when walking through the library while the librarian is teaching a lesson. Thanks.
I would suggest doing library lessons for the classes that adjoin the library. Explain to the classes the need for quiet while in the library. Maybe when they see what happens when you instruct them they will see the need to behave properly when they go through the library.
