Age Appropriate Reading? Hunger Games - 3rd grade???

I am the librarian at a Pre K 3 - 12th grade private school. We have super readers here at our school- some read way above their grade level.

What do you do with children who read above their level at say 3rd grade.

I have a child who wants to read The Hunger Games and he is in 3rd grade!!! I told him No and he said he had seen the movie and his Dad told him he could read it. I find it totally inappropriate for him to read this in the 3rd grade yet the child struggles through Harry Potter??

Am I being Crazy???

CeCe Reading level has nothing to do with age/grade level. The reading level is set by a formula using word count, sentence length and something else-I've forgotten what. Interest has nothing to do with reading level.

Joy If you are crazy, then move over, because I'm right with you. The reader's right to read collides with "right child, right book, right time" in lots of cases. In the case of The Hunger Games (which I loved!) the content is waaaayyyyy not third grade by the time we get to The Mockingjay. Kae I don't have a problem with the first book in the Hunger Game series but the following two have content that is not appropriate for elementary students. However the parent should have the last say if the child truly wants to read it. I haven't added the first yet but probably will for 4th and 5th grade students.
