How to deal with political back stabbing already?

Finally! A long term sub-position in my chosen field! I arrive with a smile in my heart every morning. BUT, only 8 weeks into teaching and I'm already being attacked! (What took so long?)

Here's what happened...The teacher I am subbing for is on sabbatical. She already has her Master's but is taking some courses "for fun". She came into the classroom after school hours and is livid that I moved things around. (Yes, she's a control freak). I tried to be conscientious of her things, but frankly I have to be able to teach. Sooooooooooo, I got reprimanded by my principal saying that I am only a "guest" in her school. My thoughts are,"It isn't HER room, it's the taxpayers and school district's!!"

There were other incidents mentioned by the principal and they were comments that a third party said about me. I got the information through an email! I sent an email back stating that the facts were incorrect and that she received misinformation. That I would gladly sit down wi...See More

Leah Wow. Usually you just close your door and make sure the students are learning, but when you have a temporary position, it's more difficult.

Just a thought: Could you make an appointment with the principal? At the meeting, be pleasant and enthusiastic. State how much you are enjoying teaching at the school and then a few of your concerns ...See More

Make some friends before you need one Try to make some friends before you need one. I wish I had better advise for you. Pray that you can be of service at the school. With the economy as it is people can be pretty ugly in any line of work. People start fearing for their jobs.

I'd get out of there if I were you. The teacher's an unappreciative hag, the principal's made it clear where you are on her totem pole, and who is this nosy-ass third party to treat you like dirt?

Plus you've got the lesson planning, the grading, and all the other stuff that subs are rarely paid to carry home with them. Both these women ought to be bending over backwards to make sure you stay.

Honestly, consider whether the benefits, whatever they are, outweigh putting up with this abuse. In particular, a principal who doesn't have your back will throw you under the bus in a second if anything goes wrong in your class (parents complain, student gets hurt, roof leaks). But they all sound like ugly, unappreciative nuts, and that might make the situation unsalvageable.

If you haven't signed a contract for a set length of time, you could conceivably just go in early tomorrow and tell the principal you won't be back Monday. That would give you tomorrow to say goodbye to the children. Or you could consider saying you'll stay an extra week until she finds somebody else, but you certainly don't owe them that courtesy after the way they've behaved. Might be better for the kids that way, although if this is how the guest teacher in that room is going to be treated, the kids might be in for a revolving assortment of them anyway.

But none of that's on you!

Judy2/CA I think a long term sub job would be difficult - trying to do your job and being respectful of the other teacher's room(it is her work space). Pizwit If I had a long term sub I wouldn't expect things to be as I set them up..... well desk, etc. There are many dynamics in a classroom that NEEDS changing. I rearrange my student's desk weekly according to what I have planned. I would think that the sub would not move heavy bookcases but even if she/he did it would not be the end of the world.
