To the latter I'd say, " I certainly want to hear students speak and I encourage their thoughts and opinions, but both learning and teaching involve talking and discussion. We're here to ask questions and discuss our ideas and I'm here to guide us through that. Talking is my job. "
I could also just say, ' teachers talk. That's our job. I'm required to talk."
To nobody likes you I'd say - I hope they can come to like - --- math, history, reading ,literature - whatever subject it is that you teach.
" I hope everybody can come to like history. That's what important. History is enriching and important. Whether students like me is not important. "

Information loss can be rapid - skills loss too. It's not uncommon for students to forget the operations. It's why we do so much 'math maintenance' - they forget.
Many kids have no real understanding of math - they do what we tell them to do but they have no real understanding of it - they're doing it rote. When you do things in a rote way, you quickly forget it unless you're doing it every dat.
Here's a sample: In 45 B.C., the Romans began celebrating New Years on January first. Before that, they celebrated New Years on March 21, which their mythology said was the date of the creation of the world. The dates of holidays are seldom moved. If you could move the date of a holiday, which one would you move? To what date would you move it? Why would you move it?
