Any advice on middle school (5-8) remedial reading? Just graduated and will be starting my first job in February. Is there a curriculum or sequence of skills that anyone uses that is successful? Thanks.
Middle schoolers with weak reading skills are usually those whom nature didn't intend to be phoenetic readers. Test for their reading level and then take them two grade levels down from that and everyday they should be reading on their own at that lowered level - if you can get them to do that. That will improve their reading skills while you work with them at instructional level in class.
Middle schoolers with weak reading skills have come to believe they're dumb. No one ever explains to them why they have weak reading skills - most won't know they have a learning difference but when they do know that, it can help them to regain confidence because they really do attribute their weak reading to being dumb.
They understandably lack confidence - how can they do well in any class if they can't read??
