I have been a foreign language teacher for 6th and 7th grade for the past 5 years, and I honestly thought by now I would manage my classes like a pro. But no. I looove my subject, I looove to teach (when having good students), but I cannot manage or discipline my poorly behaving students - and I have a ton of those. They come in to my class, as if they just got out to recess. I feel like a mouse, nobody hears or even notices me. I have up to 31 students per class, and it is killing me.

So, here I am, at the end of my 5th year teaching, wondering WHY I haven't made any progress in classroom management. Sadly, loving teaching is not enough. If I cannot manage the class, I should probably give up teaching.

I don't know what to do next in my life. I just always wanted a job that I would love, and that I could do for the rest of my life...

muinteoir I wish I had discovered the power of procedures much earlier in my career. They make all the difference.

muinteoir (THIS ONE) I hit the wrong key too soon :(

I wish I had discovered the power of procedures much earlier in my career. Procedures, not rules, make all the difference.

Like Kim, I am a middle school science teacher, and I run my classroom much like she does, often with 30+ students.

I've linked my -old- handbook so you can see what...See More

Maria Spinosa Dear Sad in SC, This is my first post EVER! I have been a teacher for 15 years in private and public schools and in grade levels from K-8. Right now I am teaching ESL 7th and 8th grade in a poor urban school district, very tough kids! I have read The First Days of School every year since my first year. It has freed me to adore my students! I know i...See More
