Help! I have a student who is taking his STAAR reading test for the third time in another week. He is an eighth grader, so he needs to pass it. He struggles with reading. We are doing tutorials right now to get prepared, but they are not going well. He just doesn't get it when it comes to comprehending main idea, inferences, poetry, or context clues. I am at a loss for how to help him succeed. Today we did a released test for practice, and he missed 15 out of 27 questions. Not only does he not understand what he reads, but he won't reread or use the dictionary for help. Any ideas? He really needs to pass this test!

Deb ms/IA What if you had him read the test aloud and the answer choices. We have started using this technique for some of these kids and it has helped them focus and do a bit better on the tests.

He does much better when I read to him because I am a fluent reader, pausing at commas and stopping at periods. He is not, so his sentences run together. He has a hard enough time getting through the passage, much less understanding or listening to what he h...See More

I don't understand I don't get it. How does a reading test that is read aloud to a student show any indication of that student's ability to read?? It seems to me to be a measure of the student's ability to listen. If the kid can't pass the test, why is he testing on that level? He can't read it! How about teaching him to read instead of focusing on passing a test? sm...See More

Deb ms/IA Nobody is asking the teacher to read the reading test to the student. A reading test must be read by the student. In my district we have started having some students read the test aloud as they take it. This way the proctor knows the student is reading the test and not just picking an answer and completing the test in 5 minutes.
