1:1 in the Middle School

We have 1:1 take home ipads for the 6-7-8th graders. All their textbooks are on the ipad, and they receive most science and math assignments through Google Drive, and use Notability to do the work and then submit almost all science and math assignments through Dropbox. Other subjects are still highly paper and pencil, but the books are on the ipad. We are disappointed in the amount of time wasted on things non-school related activities and for a handful of kids, the level of achievement they are attaining. I personally think that just doing their work, even the reading, takes longer when it is all done on the ipad. We have tried to limit where they can access. For some students we have removed access to Safari. We are meeting Tuesday before the kids come back to discuss other options. Has any one else had issues along these lines, what have you done?

I'm not exactly sure what the problems are that you are asking about. However, I can tell you how my district has handled the student computer roll out.

SY15-16 was the first year for all middle school students to receive Chrome books. Our district decided to start middle school because they figured that was where they would encounter the most problems.

All text books are on their Chrome books. Some students find it easier to still use the old fashioned text book.

As far as accessing unapproved sites, we use GoGuardian which monitors the students' use of the their Chrome Book in the classroom. A teacher then has the option to "lock" their Chrome book, or just tell them to get off the site.

If they access something inappropriate at home on their Chrome Book, somehow, our Tech specialist gets a notice the very next morning, either from the district or through whatever software they use to monitor that, and the student is dealt with at that time.

I find that the students still look at their Chrome book as a "toy" rather than a "tool". Hopefully, once the Chrome books become more mainstream and common in the classroom, this attitude will change. I think that stems from their use of their home devices for nothing but games and "socializing".

Anyway, the only way they can get online is to go through the district website, even at home. We are a Google based school, so all is done through Google classroom. There are "game" sites they can go to. They can also do Google searchers, though the IT guys have strokes blocking stuff. I'm not an IT person, so I don't know exactly how they make it so students can only go places on their Chromebooks by signing in through the district website, but it does work to keep kids "honest".
