Any tips for how to keep students engaged in a combo class when you're going back and forth with Houghton Mifflin? I'm not allowed to use anything but this mandated curriculum. I find that when I give them "What to do when finished" assignments that it is irritating for them to stop every time I come back to their group to teach them. My transitions are poor right now...I don't have the timing yet.

I work with 6th and 7th grade students. I am struggling with the homework consistancy in Language Arts in both grades. Students receive a complete Unit Outline including the deadlines and assignments and are only required to submit major assignments once a week. Do other teachers with upper grade combinations have similar homework experiences? If you have solutions or alternatives please enlighten me.

Email if you'd like to chat more about combos. I teach a 1/2 as well and would like to talk. I use Houghton Mifflin, but I supplement with my own things, so it sounds like we'd have stuff to talk about. I've checked the chat room here, but combo postings seem best left to this board.
Hi everybody! This is my first post to this board! Thanks so much for reading my post. I taught a 2/3 multiage years ago and am now on a district gifted committee. I suggested a 5/6 gifted program (can you even imagine??). I was asked to find research backing that up. I am finding tons on the benefits of multiage in general which I know I can stretch into benefits for gifted children. Can anyone point me in the right direction though of specific research for gifted kids? Any info would be helpful!
Hello - I am in desperate need of a good, solid, engaging research report packet for the 4/5 grade level. My students should be starting a research report during Black History Month, and I don't want to use what I used last year... I am desperate and totally behind in schedule, so anything you can suggest to me would be appreciated. Thanks...
Linda teaches first. Jenn teaches second. We currently work together to meet the needs of our students. We are thinking of proposing allowing us to try a multiage 1/2 classroom for the 07/08 school year. We need help!
Will you be required to follow a scripted program or are you free to teach the standards as you choose to?

Last year I taught a 1st/2nd combo by myself. It was not because I asked to, but out of necessity to maintain the 20:1 ratio. To meet the need of my students better, I asked for student teachers. This allowed me to group students, and provide teacher assistance so that fewer students were not left alone to get into trouble. Sometimes I grouped by grade level, and sometimes by ability, depending on what I was expected to accomplish. We have to follow a pacing guide, which can be restricting. I also utilized a lot of centers that reinforced skills required by standards. You could also offer a "looping" arrangement where the first graders will automatically go to your second grade partner to continue the program you organize... >>
For each month I made a monthly calendar on a large poster board. For each day I found an important person’s birthday or important event. I saved these posters and used them each year. Without even realizing it I had created a multicultural calendar of famous people and events.
To help you duplicate this monthly calendar I have links on my Calendars and Holidays page on my website [link removed]
