becI teach and elementary auditioned choir and I would never let someone stay in the group who has such an attitude. In fact, I have decided that this year, their attitude is more important than their talent. It is not fair to the other kids to have someone in there who brings them down and isn't committed to supporting the group.
There are several who won't and that's fine, but when most of the kids have one and like to play at home I don't feel like I'm having to reteach so often. I put songs up on my website for them to practice with or direct them to recorder websites that do the same.
I've done the purchasing different ways depending on the school. Once we bought a certain number then kids could bring in money and buy them first-come first-served, other places preferred for kids to order them ahead of time and we only bought exactly the number paid for ahead of time. Students who move in to the school later feel left out though, so I always ordered a few extra to have on hand just in case.

My name is Noa and i'm a music teacher in high school in Israel. I'm thinking of taking a Dalcroze Eurhythmics course in summertime, so i can combine Dalcroze teaching in my ear training lessons. i wonder, do anyone of you are teaching in high school using dalcroze methods? i would like to hear about your expirience.
So...I'm a career switcher to elementary education in my 3rd year (as most of you know). I was an opera singer, and I even came to that late in life.
Because I really started learning music seriously at the age of 26, I have never really been able to hear or catch on to harmony. (I NEVER sang prior to age 21.)
I'm trying my best, and I am learning to hear basic stuff through my Kodaly I training (not sure I can do Kodaly II because of my lack of ear training skills), but I think my 40-some year old brain has almost reached its max skill level.
So...my question is: how can I help my choir sing 2-part harmony when I can't hear it or do it myself? Impossible?
I had them sing in unison their first 2 years and this year I started them with canons and then had them perform partner songs for their winter performance. Partner songs are no problem for me to teach.
The partner songs were a HUGE success, but I can't have them sing them all the time...and there really aren't any good collections of partner songs out there...the ones I have are very juvenile and sound like Music K-8 songs (which I am not a fan of).
Any advice? (Please don't say "learn how to sing harmony". I've really been trying for 15 years now...it's happening VERY slowly. I still only hear a wall of sound when I listen to a classical choir...I don't hear parts at all. I only passed ear training I-V in college because our kind teacher allowed us to prepare our test selections in advance...so I memorized them. My skill level right now is that I can solfege unknown pentatonic folk songs VERY slowly and with some difficulty. I try to do that for practice.)
Google that much of the lyrics and you can probably find it.

We're having a whole school assembly today and during it, there's going to be a 10 minute transition time, where stuff is moved and 2 big performance groups change places. They want me to "do something" to keep the kids occupied.
Ideas? 5-10 minutes. VERY LITTLE space. The gym will be packed.
I was thinking of teaching my classes today 2-3 Move Its from Feierabend...but classes never really LOVE those. I don't have any other ideas. Trying to yell out a song will be futile. I think I may have to stick with the Move Its. I can have my 4 classes from today be the leaders and everyone else follow.
It is almost the end of the year. Monday is my choir concert and I am so frustrated with my 8th grade choir. They are just not putting any energy into anything. Even with that I have two girls who are always complaining about something from the room being to cold to it being to hot etc. It is always well I think this and that. We shouldn't do this song or I don't this we sound good etc. She is the one who missed the Christmas program because she was in ISS and now she thinks she can run the show. I told her today in front of the class I didn't need nor want her comments. Then her friend said she was going to tell the principal that I would not listen to her friend. I wrote her up in the computer so he could read it so if she does he would understand. Also, How do you get the kids to open their mouths and sing. They did a great job in the Christmas program now you can't even see their mouths open when they sing and I have been trying to get them to open their mouths all semester. So frustrated. There are only 16 girls and I have to mic them to get any sound in the gym. UGH. I am ready for school to be OVER. 75&37; of this class is failing 2 or more core subjects just because they won't do the work and turn in the work incomplete. I really hate to see the MAP scores ( state testing) on the 8th grade this year. UGH!!!

When I was in choir forever ago, our director always told us "when you open your mouth, you should be able to fit three fingers in there." I still remember it, and even now when I sing at home, I sometimes check just to be sure....

This past week, a wonderful man brought by a Mountain Dulcimer and asked if I wanted it. I took a small session at AOSA this past year, and I AM interested in learning more. So, of course, I said "Yes!". And "Thank you!". Well, now I have it, and I"m not sure where to begin. Does anyone know of any really good books to use to learn to plan this wonderful instrument? Any videos to recommend?
Thanks in advance! I would love to be able to play a few pieces for my kids next year! :)
