They now have us fighting to keep Obamacare, and this is insane. The graph below shows the "Deaths Caused by Lack of Health Insurance." The single payer is flat, because there are no uninsured.

Yet, Dick Gephardt, the former Democratic House minority leader, laughed off the idea of single payer at a health insurance conference earlier this month, and said, "There is no way you could pass single payer in any intermediate future,"

You should also know that, after congress, Gephardt became a corporate lobbyist serving Peabody Coal and Goldman Sachs, among others. He also serves on the board of the health insurance company, Centene, receiving annual compensation of around $315,000 in cash and stock awards.

IMHO, this depicts the arrogance of the insurance industry. They think they have the American public by the throat and that we can do nothing! Result: They will continue to squeeze for every penny they can get!

EasTexSteve According to who? Is "lack of health insurance" some new fatal disease? Insurance doesn't cause or prevent death. Healthcare can cause or prevent death. And, just because you may have health insurance, that doesn't mean you can afford to pay the copays and deductibles allowing you to use it to pay for healthcare. Bob R/CA It's strange that Republicans got so exercised when they thought Obama "kicked 5 million off insurance." Now they plainly believe insurance does nothing.

EasTexSteve Insurance does a great deal - if you can afford to use it. I would think you could figure this out.

T.E.C. - Iowa ETS's comment that "Insurance doesn't cause or prevent death" is crazy. But worse, there are plenty of studies showing that death are caused by lack of access to health care and insurance is the gatekeeper.

For example, you need only read the article "New study finds 45,000 deaths annually linked to lack of health coverage" which starts wi...See More

T.E.C. - Iowa IMHO, the real point is both the arrogance and the blindness of the insurance people and Dick Gephardt. They were specifically asked if single payer isn't an "existential threat" - a threat to their existence - and they laughed.

They cannot see the mounting rage that will consume their industry!
