I would like to know if nayone has reading comprehension questions for the New Series Bailey School Kids - Jr. Chapter Books by Debbie Dadey. I have a group of 6th garders with low comprehension skills. They love this series.
I have a new student in my room who is EXTREMELY slow! She came to my school in January, and was in another room, but the teacher and parent had major issues, so she was moved to my room about 4 weeks ago. She came to my school in January, and was in another room, but the teacher and parent had major issues, so she was moved to my room about 4 weeks ago. She can't finish any of her work in the allotted time, when others are finished and reading AR. I have spoke with her step-mom and she said that the child is like this at home as well....takes forever to do anything unless you stand over her the whole time. She is also behind because the first semester, when she was with her mother, she missed a combined total of 9 weeks of school. I don't know how to help her get any faster except to stand over her the entire time, but I can't do that because I have other students! I work with her in the afternoons to try to catch her up......I have her in my lowest reading group, but they are all at 85+ WCPM and she is doing good to get 60WCPM. (I know the others get really bored in reading groups listening to her read, but they are all very respectful and try to encourage her) We use timers for fluency and math facts, but they don't seem to help her get any faster. The dad and step-mom are concerned and supportive. They realize that she may be retained, but still want to do anything possible to help her catch up and get to where she can do her work at the same pace as her peers. Any ideas on how to get her to speed up?
I was feeling pretty good about my fluency rates until I read that your lowest are 85 wpm, then that good feeling took a flying leap downward! I'm glad to know that you teach second. I teach first. I'm feeling better now! LOL!

I would be focused on her ability to do the services provided.
Help her out, but don't worry too much about it. I bet her clients are understanding and thankful that she is good at what she does.

I teach my children to give the coins bunny ears. Some teachers call it giving the coins hair. Pennies get no bunny ears, nickels get one, dimes get two, and quarters get 5. We just simply make short lines coming out the top of the coin. It is amazing how quickly the children can learn to count by counting the bunny ears by fives and then adding 1 for each penny. Towards the end of the year I try to transition them into touching the coins the number of times versus drawing the rabbit ears because I know some 2nd grade teachers will have no clue what they are talking about. This strategy is very simple for coins on worksheets, etc. I also teach them that when they are counting actual manipulatives to place them on a sheet of paper and add the bunny ears. Pick as many as you need that are full of descriptions that children can understand.
