Do you think that a token economy in a classroom is a good idea? I've seen it in the field a lot, and many students seem to really enjoy it. I feel as though it motivates them a lot. If you agree, what types of rewards systems would you use in your classroom?

They are all bright students who were all very successful in the beginning of the year, but their motivation has just progressively gotten worse! They do not want to participate and put in very little effort into their homework and studying.
If anyone has any ways to motiviate these students please help! I've heard of using a token economy in younger elementary schooled classrooms and am looking for some feedback on the use of this system in older classrooms. Has anyone tried this before? Was it successful? My goal is to both intrinsically and extrinsically motivate my students to learn, will the token economy only provide extrinsic motivation for my students? Please help!
By definition a token economy only provides extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is far more difficult to achieve but I find I do best with that when what I'm trying to do is see that each day in my classroom is a good day for students. I don't sit around dreaming up trick questions for tests but put my energy into having a well-planned and interesting lesson plan. Each night I plan... and think - what can we do tomorrow that will teach the concept in a way that will interest them?
Your manner can go a long way towards motivating students - do you enjoy your subject? Let them see that. What is fascinating about your subject? Teach it that way.
People are what motivates other people. People respond to people. Whether that's intrinsic or extrinsic doesn't matter as much - if students look forward to your class, you're doing something right and they can't help but learn something too.
I am responsible for planning our Churches Epiphany Celebration for Grades 1-6. I am looking for a special blessing or something that the kids can participate in.
You could set up your Mary/Joseph and baby Jesus (doll) and have a child offstage doing the camel boy.
You could adapt the words and message and the children could bring something to give to others in Jesus' name, maybe it could be mittens, scarves, baby blankets...assign an item for each class to give and give all to a shelter.

Please read the attached information pertaining to a cultural showcase that lends to the best of edutainment programming and in-house field trip alternatives.
With the winter lockdown contributing to cabin fever within our homes and schools, teachers and program directors are becoming anxious and creative in their attempt to harness the restless energy of their students while at the same time stimulating young minds.
Rolling Thunder Enterprises has over two decades of working within the Georgia school system and our program initiatives allow for winter and pre- spring bookings at a reduced price as our spring schedule is conflictive with pre-scheduled events and other RTE productions. Our contact information is below should you elect to be the educator that thinks outside the box of regimented old school teachings and bring something refreshingly authentic, educational, entertaining and fun to your school or classroom.

Our school used to do donuts in the morning and decided to stop for that reason. We have purchased car magnets with the CSW theme and our school name on them to give to each family instead.
Does anyone have any ideas for a bulletin board for Catholic Schools Week? Preferably something that goes with the theme Catholic Schools A+ for America. I teach 3rd grade. Thanks!

I made a poster with the flag and the slogan on it and put it in the middle of a bulletin board, then I had the students write a sentence and tell what service they can do for the community. If you read the explanation: The logo designed for the week displays the words "Catholic Schools: A+ For America" beneath a stylized banner of stars and stripes in red and light blue. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2011 celebrates the fact that Catholic schools are an added value ("a plus") for the nation. Because of their traditionally high academic standards and high graduation rates, all supported by strong moral values, Catholic schools and their graduates make a positive contribution to American society. Catholic schools give a high level of service (the A+ level) to local communities because of the many service projects students undertake. "Giving back to the community" and "helping others" are values instilled in every Catholic school student. Catholic schools give a high level of service to the nation (the A+ level) by serving students from all economic backgrounds and giving them a strong academic and moral foundation, allowing them to succeed in life, serving in the government, industry, business, non-profit and educational fields.
They could even draw or color the flag logo on top of their paper. It's great to get writing samples on the bulletin board.
We are allowed 5 days per school year for sick/personal leave. Unused days do not roll over. Our salary is "docked" for any days over 5. Exceptions are allowed for severe illness or for death in immediate family. These are reviewed on an individual basis by the head and board of trustees. We have no bank into which teachers may donate unused days for others.
Click below for a printable for Grandparents Day, by Beth Newingham. If the questions don't suit your grade level, you could adapt the interview to your students' needs.
Also, use the search Teachers.Net feature to find other resources - there are at least a couple of ideas posted in the Lesson Bank.
