Doctors say take two aspirin and call me in the morning which is treating the symptom - that only works if there's no real underlying problem.
Is there an underlying problem with these families? If there is, I'm not sure a creative idea will work - well, it would have to be pretty creative like - wave a magic wand and fix the family's problems.
What are those problems? Do you know? If there's an alcoholic in the family, that slows everyone up in the morning.
Has anyone sat down and really tried to talk with these families one by one? Schools often take a threatening stance which rarely works and usually only makes everyone madder and everything worse. What if someone said, "John's first period teacher is going to gather up the work John misses in that first period and we hold that will help. But we know it's hard on John to miss first period every day. Is there anything we can do to help John get to school earlier?"
Of course the answer to that would seem to be no but so rarely do schools, including mine, take that stance. Maybe it wouldn't work but it would surely be creatively different.
