I can't believe I did this...but after many years of teaching in a Catholic school and seeking out public school employment...I just turned down an offer for a reading specialist position within a public school. The pay was only a little above my current salary. The main reason for turning it down was that my child would not receive the full tuition benefit she receives now for attending another Catholic school within the diocese...that would be a large out of pocket expense...and there was no way I would remove her from that school.

Has anyone here ever had to face this problem? I hope that I made the right decision.

Teach09 My CT at the Catholic school where I student taught is AWESOME and actually turned down a position a few years ago at a public school. You have to go with your gut and if you walk away from a place where you're happy for the sake of money, there is always a possibility that you could begin to dislike teaching.

Beth Thanks for your input! I am getting the feel that public schools are so test-oriented that it takes away the joy of teaching. Not so in my classroom..I am enjoying every minute. That has got to make up for less sizeable income.

Teach09 I cannot agree with you more! I turned down a private school position for a public one and it nearly broke my heart! -Everything- in the public school classroom is test-oriented. Nothing can happen that isn't done in preparation for the test. On top of that, behavior discipline issues typically abound and homework is a fight. Perhaps I'm a bit jade...See More
