Ideas activities for Good Friday? in school

We are paying for our fun snow days...we have to come on Good Friday for 1/2 a day. Sister (bless her!) wants us to treat the day like a retreat. Any ideas for any grade? We are k4-8TH Miss Angel

Old Faithful M. Lutheran Schools are in session a half day Good Friday. We have 11:00 church service, then dismissal, but we also have had a full week of Holy Week activities.

My second grade...as in every grade I have taught, do activities to dramatize Palm Sunday, Maundy (Command) Thursday and Good Friday.

I also do lead up activities that include science projects such as making a crystal garden and imagining we are in the garden with Jesus.

We do the palm branch waving...we make the branches and children take turn being Jesus and riding a stick donkey that I have made.

On Maundy Thursday we replicate the Lord's supper with grape juice and matzos, putting our desks in a long line and a candle in the middle...and all the lights are out.

We also wash each other's feet...I match the children up, have them bring their own towels.

We have all school devos Mon.,Tues. and Wed....short time in church at the start of the day and do the 11:00 service for Thursday and Friday. We have found that with the 11:00 services on Wed. during Lent, also, seniors come because many don't like to be out in the evening for the dinner (before each Wed. Lenten service) and the hymn sing and 7:00 service.

For seasonal events, I also make my own word searches on a free online wordsearch site. That way I can customize it for our faith concepts/words.

I customize my calendar for the week with a mini palm branch for Palm Sunday, a chalice for Thursday and a black cross with a red heart for Friday. For Easter, I have made a large rock out of const. paper, with a brad. that has a stone that may be moved away. There is nothing behind the stone. Children speculate beforehand what is behind the stone. When they discover "nothing" I say, "exactly!" and then we do the lesson about Jesus was no longer in the tomb, but had arisen.

I have a set of "Resurrection eggs" with symbols of Holy Week. These are good for teaching, as well. I would think if you had a set of those, you could use them for a Good Friday lesson together with classes.

You might also screen and have an all-school showing of an Easter Story DVD.

Time is getting short. I hope you get some ideas....Do you have student choirs? You could do an all-school chapel with singing.
